I heard a rumor that WordPerfect 5.0 or such might yet become an Amiga
product. Any news on this. It sure would be nice.
Hey – it'd be nice if WP 4.x became an AMiga product. It's still an IBM one
with a poor port job – and it crashes constantly here.
I've about had it with ports, personally.
And with WP Corp.

WP crashes on your AMiga constantly? I've been using Word Perfect on an
Amiga 500 & Amiga 2000 without flaws for the last 1.5 years. I think ONCE
it crashed on my Amiga 500 – and that was due to some strange printer
driver I changed to.
Ben, How old is the version of WP you're using? If it's older than a year a
call to WP is in order for an upgrade (free in most cases too).
Mike, I got it from WP corp within the month. It has the new requester, all
of that. Many of the bugs that were killing me are gone. The Roman numerals
in the TOC now print correctly. I am able to position the cursor with the
mouse and it's *really* on the line where I placed it (that one used to
drive me WILD). But the print stuff crashed on me big time, and I gave up.
I mean, what is this – upgrade number 10? 20?
No wonder they can't make money in the Amiga market.

Well, I found the disks, but there is no versio number on em. Lemme start
it (if the message ends you know that WP crashed me) ok – it sez
"WordPerfect 4.1" in the window when it starts.

Ben this puzzles me..what printer do you have and which driver are you
using? could it be a printer/printer driver mismatch? I have used the
Epson, NEC and Postscript drivers with never a problem. I am a Beta tester
for WP Amiga so I have a potentially buggier platform but it has been quite
stable for me for the last year or two.

Constantly. I have the newest version, got it no less than 4 weeks ago
direct from WP. The most recent crash, I was running back and forth between
the printer window and the main window, mucking about with margins, font
numbers, and pitch. Each time I printed the first page, the windows would
refresh slower… and slower… and slower. Finally, at a point where the
printer window was taking, oh, say 5 seconds to come to the front (on my 25
mhz '030, btw) it just hung up. I hung it up too.
I restarted the system, and imported the whole thing into PageStream. Now I
have a printable manual, and I have 100% control over it.
The only reason I even bothered to get the upgrade to WP is because our
Board Master manual was written using it (It's about 100 pages) and we
needed to update some stuff for a reprint (good news in itself… last time
we printed 1000 copies! Not bad for a vertical CAD system!) Anyway, It
seemed like an awful lot of work to re-margin, re-table, and re-etc in
PageStream, and plus, PageStream is NOT a fast program. otoh, PageStream
works for me the way WP works for you.
I've come to the conclusion that it's all in the way you use these things.

I've never had my latest WP crash on me, not even while mt'ing
(which is when the old one crashed). To call it simply a "bad port" seems,
to me, to show some ignorance of just how much better it is on the Ami than
on IBMs (I work with the same version on both machines, and the Ami is much
easier and nicer). Personally, if WP sold more (i.e., if the Ami market
supported productivity s/w better), then we'd see more support. That is a
simple, hard reality of the business market. Now, to complain, let's all
scream for a DB III+/DB IV port, or ORACLE, and 1-2-3 and other NAME
productivity s/w (could we HOPE for TURBO C???). With s/w like that, the
Amiga could penetrate the business market and be taken seriously.
Oh, I dunno about all that…. I've seen WP 5.x on a 386 and I was rather
impressed – it made our version seem… old.
As for buggy – it is – it may well be the way I use it, but I have had
problems with it since the first day I bought it, a looooong time ago.

Phillip was comparing 4.1 on MS-DOS to 4.1 on the Amiga. I must say 4.1 on
the Amiga compares very favorably to 4.2 on Stratus mainframe.

Give ProWrite a try. PageStream even has a ProWrite import module and I
know how you love PageStream.

Um… prowrite? huh. I'm sorta using UEDIT for everything now, just
importing as ASCII text. Works great…. I got into the WP bind because the
Board Master manual was written a while ago, back when I still thought WP
was going to _try_ and support the machine, and whats-his-name was around
here being positive and upholding the besmirched name of WP corp. Now I
just don't want to use the thing at all. I threw it out a couple of
times… got forced back each time, but I think I've been able to cleanly
break away now. I did keep the WP files, and I will keep WP on the disk,
because people sometimes give me docs thataway.
But I think all future text stuff will be UEDIT -> PageStream, if I need to
print it, of course. I must say the more tricky I get with PageStream, the
better I like it.
