#Fatter Agnus/A500 ?
5 messages in this thread
The following is my problem:
SYSTEM: Amiga 500 (Rev. 5 Motherboard)
501 Memory Expansion
1.3 ROM
Fatter Agnus (checked good)
[Sub System w/ A2090 & Octobyte 2M]
SETUP: Workbench1.3
JRBeep installed in Startup-Sequence
(replaces screen flash w/beep)
ARP installed (replaces C: commands)
PROBLEM/S: Selecting Version from Workbench to cause a beep
crashes the machine just after the sound is heard.
No guru message displayed.
Passes normal sounds i.e. voice/digitized sounds.
SCENARIO 1: Fatter Agnus installed.
Sub System connected.
Drive Controller installed.
Memory installed.
Insert Workbench screen displayed. Disk inserted. Insert Workbench
screen disappears. As system just starts to look at disk (drive motor
doesn't seem to turn on yet) GURU 4.00001970 pays a visit.
SCENARIO 2: Fatter Agnus installed.
Sub System connected.
Drive Controller installed.
Insert Workbench screen displayed. Disk inserted. System boots. ARP
assign command will only accept single parameters. Avail command returns 0
fastmem and 1M chipmem. System crashes (no GURU) reboots and cannot find
Hard Drive when Version used to produce a beep or TurboCopy beeps. Passes
normal sounds i.e., voice/digitized sounds. Acts same with Comodore C:
commands.
SCENARIO 3: Fatter Agnus installed but wired for Fat Agnus.
Sub System connected.
Drive Controller installed.
Insert Workbench screen displayed. Disk inserted. System boots. ARP
assign command accepts multiple parameters. Beeps work. Memory not tried.
Any insight, wisdom, or know how, to make this Fatter Agnus chip work?
My first consern is to make the Fatter Agnus work on a stand alone 500. I
hope once this is acomplished the rest of the system will fall into place.
Any comments welcomed.
Michael,
Try your machine with a different A501 card…I think you'll find
that's the problem.

Should I use a Commodore 501 or someone elses?
Do you have a A500 with the fatter Agnus that will work with JRBeep?
(JRBeep comes with JRComm.)

Michael,
Preferably a real A501…but it shouldn't make any difference if
you use some other vendor's equivalent.
I don't have an A500, but my A2000 has the new Agnus in it, but
since I don't use JRBeep (or JRComm for that matter)…I have no idea if
they work together or not. I presume they do since I've not seen very many
messages about it.

Michael,
Take the machine down to bare minimum configuration. (ie. just the A500 and
boot from a fresh, unmodified, Workbench disk)
If that works, start adding things like JRBeep, the A501, etc, one at a
time, then in pairs, then all together.
By using process of elimination, you can find just where the problem is.
