Look for media attention on the color nExt on Sept. 18th, including a product from Lotus that redefines spreadsheets (maybe a better Javelin?).

> Look for media attention on the color nExt on Sept. 18th So Jobs is breaking down and releasing a color machine, eh? Sounds good — lots of people just aren't impressed with black & white machines, be they NeXT, Mac, or whatever — doesn't matter how innovative the machine is if its display is "blah". 🙂 Any chance you'll be posting details on the new box? =Tom=

The color version is 24-bit and Renderman is bundled. The total nExt world shipping to date is under 8,900 units.

You mean that *all* NeXTs currently our there only total 9000 units? How are they able to stay afloat? John

Easy….. you just charge a big price for the initial unit, then you don't have to sell too many to stay afloat. 🙂 Bill, K3OZM

The San Francisco Chronicle opines that the next six months are make or break time for the Next machine. They summarize opinion as "it's nice, but is it necessary at that price?" The downside of any failure is a reinforcement of the view that MSDOS *IS* good enough. Rob.

Wonder if it's 040 based too? <grin>

-> Wonder if it's 040 based too? Good question! If not, it'll surely be ready for a CPU swap when they're available. =Tom=

Actually, I was sort of being.. uhm… (I'm embarrased…I dunno how to spell phacesious…) when I asked about it being 040 based. It's amazing at how some of the magazines are constantly chattering on about an "040 NeXT", or "040 Amiga" only "a month away"…. All I have to say is ask Dave Haynie how soon *he* thinks there will be an 040 computer of *any* make out there…. Motorola still has some "issues" to deal with rgarding the 040, period.

Rick- facetious Michael

Yup, you're right — everyone who's in the industry is saying the 68040 isn't coming out in the next "day or two". And ack! I totally missed your facetious (that's the correct spelling) note. DUH! I haven't been following the NeXT progress so I only answered to letcha know I had gotten your note. Guess I sure showed *my* ignorance on the subject. Heh! But regarding the magazines, they're trying to play it slick because of their average 3-month lead times. Isn't it wild? While the mags are nice, the most current info is always found online these days! 😉 =Tom=
