Looking through the Autodesk showreel I have seen a great moving sky in one of your pyramid animations, we have tried a few times to create a realistic sky that moves within a scene using methods such as mapping it on the inside of a dome, but these have been un-satisfactory. Any help most appreciated. Phil.

Phil: >> Looking through the Autodesk showreel I have seen a great moving sky in >> one of your pyramid animations The quickest way to get the idea is to download Jamie Clay's sky that he uploaded here in CI$ many moons ago. It includes the map and object toat works wonderfully! Anyone remember what it was called? After you see how he did it, you can easily create your own, also! Greg Pyros

I think the file Greg was refering to is CLOUDS.ZIP it consists of a large dome and a very nice cloud map. If you just put it over your geometry and slowly rotate it as your animation proceeds you will get a very nice moving cloud effect. Dave Mennenoh

PMJI – I missed the earlier part of this but I suspect that someone needs moving clouds. As the orginator of the CLOUDS.ZIP, I thought maybe I could clarify a few things. First, CLOUDS.ZIP is a set a of stills of different cloud effects created with the SMOKE IPAS. They are a study in a very limited sense of what can be done with the smoke ipas to create moving clouds. If one wanted to have clouds moving from left to right or vice versa one could use a cylinder with the smoke ipas applied to the inside of a cylinder which would then be set up to rotate slowly as I believe David was suggesting. This however was not done for the images in CLOUDS.ZIP because perspective and clouds moving into the horizon was the objective. What was used was a single rectangular plane large enough to cover the sky and angled into the horizon line. Technically one could create a cylinder which was large enough to enclose the scene and with the base scaled outward you would then have perspective into the horizon, and then you could rotate the cylinder to get clouds moving from left to right. I can see some potential problems with covering the scene, camera angle etc. but with a little effort this too should be possible. -JE

I believe this is the file Greg was referring to. The cloud map is tileable on the X axis and works quite well. I think it is from Jamie Clay. _________________________________________________________ [76703,4204] Lib: 3 CLOUDS.ZIP/Bin Bytes: 485087, Count: 185, 02-Sep-92 Title : Cloud Dome Keywords: CLOUD DOME 3DS MESH MAP 3D STUDIO Clouds.3ds and CLDSMAP.tga Looking for a cloud map to 'wrap' around your 3d World? Sorry about that, I uploaded clouds.zip about two months ago and apparently it has been replaced, mine was created with the Smoke IPAS and Gary used it as Siggraph so I assumed it was still on the system. -JE

>> Correct! That is the Jamie Clay Cloud System! Greg, Yea! and the next question is… <g> Hey Mr. Action IPAS, I once converted this cloudmap to 8 bit and slid it X pixals per frame in ani convert and then used it as animated moving clouds for a couple different projects. Can an IPAS be written to move the (24 bit) cloudmap background X number of pixels per frame horizontally? Could be useful. Just a thought. PS I'm still going through your IPAS demos to try to pick which ones to recieve from the ADESK party raffle at Siggraph. I'm just having trouble picking which ones (of course I want them all!). My personal thanks to you! -Ralph

Ralph: >> Can an IPAS be written to move the (24 bit) cloudmap background X number >> of pixels per frame horizontally? I could be done, but what I do is just take the cloud map, apply it to the inside of a cylinder with a self-illuminated material, and rotate the cylinder over the course of the animation! Quick and dirty! >> My personal thanks to you! Any my personal "you're welcome" back at ya! Greg Pyros

David – the clouds that I was referring to are titled CLOUD4.ZIP, sorry about the confusion. -JE
