#What DTP?

Hello, guys, I'm new to the Amiga computing universe, but I hope you can help
me.
My son recently became the proud owner of an Amiga 500+ with 1Mb memory, twin
floppies and Philips colour monitor. He's got a bright idea to produce a
newsletter for his friends and has seen me working with a variety of DTP
packages on my IBM-compatible PC so he's looking for a similar package. We
tried "The Publisher" but it wants 1.5Mb memory and a Postscript printer!
Can anyone suggest a package suitable for a 10-year-old boy which will run on
his fairly modest system? He's previously used "The Newsroom" on the IBM which
was also available for C64. Did it make the jump to Amiga?

I don't see a response so….
As far as I know there were only two program that would work in a 1 Meg
machine, PageSetter by Gold Disk (was not really a serious DTP program
though it did work and many newsletter have been produced with that
package), and City Disk.
I do not know the current status of either of these programs.
I believe also that there are some ShareWare or FreeWare DTP programs on
the Fred Fish series of disks.

Thanks, Bill. I've had one other response, from Karl Kugel, also suggesting
Pagesetter as well as Final Copy 2. Although you say Pagesetter isn't up to
much my 10-year old isn't looking for a great deal, in fact the more basic it
is the better.
Essentially he needs to be able to put together a "compound document" (that's
an old phrase!) with reasonable freedom to place text and graphics where he
wants them. Colour separations and Postscript fonts would just cloud the
objective!
Do you know if Pagesetter comes with any clip-art?
We're getting a CD-ROM for Christmas which comes with a Fred Fish CD. Can you
recall the names of any shareware DTP programs that might be in that
collection?

PageSetter has some clip art but only enough for tutorial purposes (as I
recall). Clip art is not all that tough to come up with. Indeed, I am
pretty sure that there is some available here on CIS.
I just looked through the first 600 fish disks and did not run across
anything for doing DTP work but memory inclines me to think that what I
saw was later than 600 anyway. I even scanned for clip-art and did not
find any but again I think that most of that sort of thing showes up after
disk 600 (I have all of the fish disks but only have the first 600 on
CDROM).

Check out Pelican Pres..
It is perfect for kids (and adults). It allows text entry, in several
difrent layouts (including cards, letters, and calanders). And has some
great clipart and fonts.

Your son might try a Wordprocessing program like FinalCopy.
