A2386 Janus Handler+lib

Hi,
I started to install my A2386 today and I've run into problems. After running
the install icon located on the Amiga Janus disk, I was to run the PCPrefs…
but the computer can't find the Janus.library. I found it located in the
dh0:Expansion/ …(I just installed 2.1 yesterday, and I know not much about my
amiga)… anyways I tried putting the Janus.library into the dh0:libs/
directory, and when I boot up, them computer crashes. If I rename the
User-startup file, so that there is none, the computer doesn't crash and I get
the WB screen. But if I try to run the pcprefs, it then crashes. It clears
the screeen and paints it with fuzzy cursors in rows, basically vertical lines.
Also, I don't know if this is normal or not, but when I boot up, the screen is
white for about 15 seconds b4 showing me my WB screen. It was much quicker with
1.3.
Anyways, does anybody know why my computer is crashing? Also, where is the
Janus Handler…. I wanted to check the version number of the one I have, and I
can't find it. It doesn't seem to be with the other Handler's I find in the
dh0:l directory.

I forgot to mention what type of system I'm running. I have an A2000 with a
GVP board that contains an 80meg HD with 8 megs of ram. I hear that my 8th meg
of ram will have to be removed in order for the BB to work?? And if that is
so… can anybody help me in doing such a thing? I bought my system used, and
never got the manual for the computer or the GVP card. I suppose I physically
remove the 1 meg ram located in postion CN17, and then I suppose I have to move
a jumper to change the setting to 7 megs instead of 8. I need to know where
this jumper is, if this is how it's done.

WELCOME to the frustrating world of A2386!!! I spent a week trying to figure
this same problem out on my own. I even had a couple of 357 rounds loaded to
solve the problem. But I reconfigured my RAM to SIX meg WITHOUT removing the
other two meg ram, and, betcha by golly wow, the Janus Library was magically
found.
Ironic, isn't it, that the IBM machines are memory hungry hogs that always want
more, more, more…
And the Amiga, humble machine that it is, wants less to do get the job done.

Me again; I just looked around the mounds of manuals that surround me and
could not find the GVP manual. The jumper to switch mem allotment is located
on the near-right-top side of the card when the front of the Amiga faces you.
You move the jumper one notch over. I recommend you contact GVP on the Vendor
Forum for exacting details.

if you are using a Impact Series II controller, the jumper settings are
as follows:
Memory SIMM Locations J5 J6 J7 J8 J9
0 MB None OFF OFF ON OFF ON
2 MB CN10-CN11 OFF ON OFF OFF ON
4 MB CN10-CN13 ON OFF OFF OFF ON
6 MB CN10-CN15 OFF OFF ON ON OFF
8 MB CN10-CN17 OFF ON OFF ON OFF
J5 through J9 are found in the block of 5 jumpers nearest the SIMMs.
You need to configure for at most 6 MB of RAM to work with a BB.

Hi Brian,
Thanks for the info! The BB works fine!! It's incredible that the manual for
the BB never talks about this anywheres (at least I didn't see it). It's too
bad I have to knock out 2 megs of ram though (not that I really need them 🙂
I've got the BB going, and installed an Ad-lib gold card with an internal
modem, and it all works fine!! Quite kewl, and the amiga still running in
behind it all.
Now I just need to upgrade my 68000 🙂
