I hate to suggest it, but have you considered the possibility that the
1200 is broken? I have seen at least one 1200 that appeared to work
normally, but had slow disk access among other little quirks.

Thats entirely possible! This is my second 1200, my first had a flicker
problem whenever one of my floppy drives clicked! (Commodore Express replaced
it) People have been telling my Seagates are slow but I don't necessarily buy
that these days…several years ago, yes.

Now that I think about it some more, that flakey 1200 I saw had that
flickering screen on disk access problem as well. The obvious solution
would be to see if your dealer could try your drive in another 1200.
