#New Volcano ?

Hi … I don't actually have a reply to this, although I'm going to try to find out. Meanwhile, if you do find out, I would really like to know. The Juan de Fuca subduction zone seems to be younger than most subduction areas (10,000,000 years … just a kid). Other such small fry have produced some really violent earthquakes as well as ubiquitous vocanoes, but this one doesn't seem to have done so, according to some. Others cite geological evidence of Tsunamis coming ashore from sea quakes. An undersea volcano is an interest proposition … Do you have coordinates for this mysterious little puffer? If so, please forward. I will try to get to the USGS when they're not quite so busy and see what they have to say. If I find something, I'll send it right on back to you. Meantime, reference is made to two articles on the Juan de Fuca from the magazine database accessible under Reference. First is reference #A5101290 by Richad Monastersky. Second ref is: #A10688560, no author stated. Both are out of Science News. I was in Oregon and Washington a few months ago, and when you see these volcano peaks rising up out the clouds, and then have a look at Crater Lake, it certainly does bear witness to the immense forces involved. …

Hi … Thanks for the info. … My main concern here isn't particularly the Strait, though I would love to sail it sometime, but rather the Juan de Fuca plate, with its ridges and transform faults and subducting regions that stretches out from just south of the Queen Charlotte Islands to northern California. Its complex and unpredictable relationship with the Pacific Plate and the mainland has me wondering if my son, who goes to school in Oregon, is in for a shake sometime this year or soon. But hell, he lives in San Francisco generally, so what am I worried about Oregon for? When I was there recently I took a trip down the Columbia River Gorge, which was magnificent, and also spent some time in the mountains. Some of the national forest folks said that St. Helens is expected to erupt again within a hundred years because it has a very active magma chamber down there. Also, when you look at the remnants of Mt. Mazama, the explosion of which sent ash to Mississippi and gave us the deepest lake on Earth, you can't help but wonder if this small, young plate is going to have something significant to say despite its youth. So … I was really talking about this plate, and wondering if an undersea volcano was literally letting off some of the steam that would otherwise wind up on land in the forms of earthquakes and volcanic activity, which is why I wanted to know where this postulate undersea volcano was. … Or, if we'd get another Surtsey soon! Morgaan, I got this info from a curious, but probably reliable source, a local service station owner. He said that he had heard it on the National TV news. The news cast said that the new volcano was located approximately 230 miles off the Oregon coast. I am the one, based on this crude location, that presumed that it must be on the Juan De Fuca Ridge. If not there, where else? Thanks for the help, Bruce

Did you fly over St, Helens? That gives a graphic picture, even 13+ yrs later. I live about 150 air miles north and felt the shock wave when it blew. M
