#Odd problem
3 messages in this thread
I have a WANGTEK (SCSI) Tape backup unit attached to the exterior
connection of the 4008 GVP control board in my Amiga 4000/040. It
works – in a fashion. Use the GVPScsiCtrl XXX DCOFF command as
recommended.
At the moment this setup seems to come unstuck when trying to backup a
large partition – say 100 Megs or more. Everything is fine for small
– under 50 Meg partitions. I have tried it with both AMIBACK and
QUARTERBACK software, and a similar error occurs.
What happens is that it is merrily backing up, and gets well on into
the backup. Quite suddenly the monitor screen goes black and both
hard disk and backup unit come to an abrupt halt…. and have to
re-boot the Amiga. This can happen at random… thar is after 29
Megs, 40 Megs, 60 Megs… and so on of backup.
I have used the WANGTEK in my old Amiga 2000 – without any problems,
with the same software. This may imply some software/hardware gremlin
in either the Amiga 4000/040 or in your GVP 4008.
Any thoughts, comments or wisdom? Hilary
If the crash was occurring at a specific point, I would think about a
settings problem but it really sounds like an I/O problem. Make sure
that both the tape drive AND the hard drives have disconnect turned
off. If the hard drive has it turned on, then it will try to
reselect and the tape drive may balk at any point.
Thanks for the comments and suggestion.
Sorry to sound foolish… but… how does one go about "making sure
that the disconnects are off"… Nice and simple…
