I have a GVP '040 @33, 16 megs fastram on board, Quantum 100 MB HD
internal daisy-chained to Maxtor (7213) 202 MB, connected to int.
SCSI drive on '040 board. System has been running well for a long
time. Started to get disk block error messages for the Maxtor
partitions. I tried DiskSalve II to no avail (kept getting lock up)
then went to Expert Prep. Tried to remap bad disk blocks but
lock-ups continued. Finally, in exasperation, did low level format of
Maxtor DH1 partition-had DH1 and DH2). Now, I can't access Maxtor. In
ExpertPrep, I get name, size and number of blocks on page one,
ghosted high and low cylinder, and everything else is ghosted.
It sounds to me like you're running into a low-level format problem.
Maxtors have a lengthy low level formating process. The drive
activity is constant during this process and may appear to be a
lockup. If interrupted during this time, Fastprep will not allow you
to do anything else to the drive. What you need to do is to get a
hold of an older version of fastprep (pre 2.0) like 1.98 and use it
to low level format the drive. You may also use Commodore's
HDToolbox, but you will have to run it from a shell by typing the path
to the program, then followed by :
HDTOOLBOX gvpscsi.device
Once you've low level formated successfully, you will then be able to
use FASTPREP on this drive again. Keep in mind that this process may
take in excess of an hour or more.
Do you mean Fast Prep or Expert Prep.
