Hello everyone,
Just returned from NewTek and wanted to pass along some information
about the Flyer. First of all, the product looks great. I got to see
some real nice footage recorded at zero gravity. Fun stuff.
I have read a lot of negative comments about the Flyer's audio
capabilities, and it's lack of SMPTE time code support. These
comments are incorrect. The audio capabilities in the Flyer software
have been greatly enhanced since the product was first displayed at
NAB. It is easy to have audio follow video (that's the default
setting), and more complex features such as split edits, and laying
down a music bed below the piece are all very easy.
The SMPTE support will be limited at first but it is possible to store
the SMPTE in and out points, along with a comment (reel 3) in the
crouton for the video clip.
As soon as I finish this note, I need to bash out my AV Video column
on it. If you have any specific questions, post them here. I may have
the answer in my notes.

That zero gravity stuff was pretty neat wasn't? Most folks probably
aren't aware that Tim Jenison and Jason Linhart were invited by NASA
to test-fly the FLYER in zero G conditions. Apparently, NASA hopes to
use the Flyer on for video acquisition for whatever reason on the
space shuttle. We are trying to get all the necessary authorizations
from NASA to do a little story on the test in a future issue of VTU.
Brent, you're right, the Flyer is looking really good (and sounding
good too!)

I thought hard drives didn't work up there!?! Or, could that be true for
drives that aren't pressurized? Or, are they going SCSI to some very large
silicon memory?

Brent,
For layering purposes, is there a way to record an edited clip directly back
onto one of the source drives? For example: Could you take a clip of video,
super a title on it, then recycle the titled video back through without going
to tape and digitizing that clip back into the system??
