Are there any 3rd-party books on 3D Studio Available? I haven't seen any mentioned in Cadence or Cadalyst. Thanks.

Michele Bousquet had written a series of six books called 3DS Tips and Tricks that will cover both release 3 and 4. A clear, concise, and well-illustrated series that takes you beyond the tutorials–each book covers a specific topic while taking you through a particular project that is illustrated on the cover: Shaping and Lofting; Morphing and Animation; Glass and Reflection; Materials and Lighting; Animals and People (BTW–the dragon image on this cover won a CADDIE Image Award this year); and Technical Tips. She has also created a poster that accompanies Material & Lighting that has all the texture map files from the CD-ROM printed out (quite handy to have on the wall near your workstation.) They will all be available soon from Delmar Publishers. You can contact the publisher for more information or to receive a catalog at 1-800-347-7707. Hope this helps. MBR

Behymer: Advanstar Communcations (publisher of CADalyst magazine) offers "3D Studio Applied" by Nancy Fulton, a book of tutorials, tips, and tricks for 3DS R3 (with CD-ROM). (Currently being updated for R4). You simply call our Marketing Services division in Cleveland at 1-800-598-6008. You can also purchase other related titles from them, including the Falling Water and Michelle Bosquet offerings (easy one-stop shopping!). Regards, Sandy Lurins Editor, CADalyst magazine

Hi Sandy, your message came to me rather than Behymer. Regarding Bousquet's offerings through Advanstar, I believe those are her first three books based on release 2. (I may be wrong.) Her complete set of 6 updated for release 3 and 4 are offered through Delmar Publishers. Delmar is also the educational distributor for Onword Press' Fallingwater by Sanchez. So, as far as one stop shopping goes… <g>… We'll have them all at Autodesk University at the bookstore if anyone wants to look them over in person. (Unfortunately, we don't offer Nancy's book(s). ;-() regards, Mary Beth

Sandy Can you tell me if the up comming issue of Cadalyst will have Sigraph news and the r4 followup? Thanks, Gary

Gary, David Cohn is supposed to submit a report on Siggraph to us for publication… it won't appear in any earlier than our November issue, for sure… as the October one is already being mailed. As for 3DS R4, we didn't want to write a first review from an early beta, so we will cover 3DS R4 in the earliest possible issue that we can, once a stable beta is in the author's hands. Should be soon… Sandy

Just a quick comment to give the perspective of a beginner here. I have both Inside 3D Studio and 3D Studio Applied. I find that Inside 3D Studio is a wealth of information but it's a bit overwhelming for a beginner. 3D Studio Applied provides structured exercises that are a good way to get started quickly and produce meaningful work. I expect to use Inside 3D Studio more often as I gain proficiency in the basics. Jay

Jay, That's good to hear, because that's how we wanted "3D Studio Applied" to be. We never intended it to be a comprehensive resource on 3D Studio, but instead to be an important learning tool for people who want to learn how to do specific things and apply them later to other projects of their own. _Inside_3D_Studio_ and _3D_Studio_Special_Effects_ from New Riders Publishing are the two best selling 3D Studio books. (3D Studio Special Effects will be out later this month, but we already have enough back orders to make it a best seller!) Inside 3D Studio has been praised as being as essential as the 3DS manuals by many forum members. Also, Gary Yost and Jack Powell have given the book an "Awesome!" rating. Pay attention here for the reaction to the Special Effects book. I think you'll hear the same kind of response. You can get these books at any major bookstore chain (Crown Books, Barns & Nobel, etc). You can also order the book directly from us at 1-800-428-5331. You can even order the books here on CIS. There are books from other publishers (Delmar and Advanstar) as well. I'm sure they will chime in here and tell you all about them. Happy reading! Kevin Coleman New Riders Publishing

While I normally don't mind being quoted regarding something I might have said, and I definitely described "Inside 3D Studio" in glowing terms, the very last word I would use to describe _anything_ is "awesome." For one thing, it's a word I relate with actors like Keanue Reeves and practices like wearing baseball caps backward. For another thing, it's not really a word (unless you look in the Dictionary of American Slang). For yet another thing, if you look up its "root" you'll find that "awe" means "dread," "terror," "the power to inspire dread." I suspect that's _not_ the message that New Riders means to convey in connection with the book. So… you can see that I really don't like that word. <g> Other than that, you're right. I think it's a great book. – Jack
