I'm planning to use 3DS for commercial purposes as visualizing architectural plans or rendering flying logos etc. My problem is that I don't have a clue how much money potential customers are willing to spend for these services. What are usual prices for modeling, rendering, animating? Could anyone help me by mailing me a price list or the like? Any help or hint is appreciated. Thanks in advance, Volker PS: Hey, not too many of you need to fear my competition, as I'm a bit offworldish here in Nuremberg, Germany… <G>

This is a pretty difficult question to answer, particularly since you're in the European market, and I think it's different than here in the US. Here animation services seem to be lumped into the "high end" and "low end" categories, with plenty of room in between being charted by desktop folks. There _are_ 3DS'ers pushing the high-end market, although the top of the line stuff (film res cine/fx) seems to be the domain of SGI, still. High end averages at $1000 per finished second, but there's plenty of leeway there. I've seen network stuff being done from anywhere from $300 to $5000 per second, and I'm sure it goes further in each direction. I usually try and figure out how much work the proposed animation will be. I ask for either a storyboard from the client or a $$$ deposit to create a client approved storyboard from which to make my estimate. That way I don't cheat myself or my client since we both know from the outset what is involved and approximately what the animation will be. John Tissavary (LUNA cie, inc)

John, thanks very much for your reply. Even if you can't compare the US and the European market, it shows me the direction my prices could be aimed at. So now all I gonna have to do is get me a licensed copy of 3DS. Your idea of using a storyboard is precisely what I suppose to do in order to not rip off my (potential) clients… Thanks again, Volker

Volker, I was born in Nuremberg, and lived there for a few months.. My father is in the Army, and we were stationed there at the time. (Haven't we had this discussion before?) Small world. JNJ
