#Modem

All — I want to upgrade my modem. Using a 1200 Baud. I went to Comp USA and
they have a US Robotics Sportster 14,400 that is Hayes Compatible, external
with of without FAX for the same money. $149.00. The man assured me it would
work with the Amiga 3000, but I'm not so sure. What do you all like? Get back
to me. Jean
Jean, the US Robotics modem should be fine with your A3000. We don't see too
many of the USR modems in Australia, but those who go to the trouble of
bringing them over here seem to be very happy & proud of them (for all the
effort it took them to get one over here!)
Can't comment much on the price I'm afraid (Don't know the US Market) but for
$149 how could you go wrong ?

The external 14,400 modem should work. You won't be able to use that
bundled FAX software, since it's probably for the PC. <grin>
If you're interested in FAX software for the Amiga, there are a few
different packages you can buy. I use GPFax. Great stuff.
Jean,
The US Robotics Sportster 14.4 Data/Fax modems are great. As a matter
of fact they are the corporate standard for the company I work for. I use
a Zoom Data/Fax 28.8 which is about $50-$70 more which works well for me
too. Any 'ol way for once the people at CompUSA are correct in saying
that the USR would work with the Amiga 3000 (I own a A4000). Bottom line
is if you do not find a better price for the USR then just buy it at
CompUSA.

P.S. I have seen the USR as cheap as $135 at CDW 1-800-454-4CDW. If you
do not mind mail order.
Just Multitasking Operating Systems AmigaDos & OS/2.
Jean –
I use the US Robotics Sportster External 14.4 Faxmodem with my A2500 with
no problems. I think that 149.00 is a reasonable price.

Jean,
If I were going to buy a new modem I would look for one of the ones that
support voice mail such as the Zoom VFX. I really don't know how well
this works on an Amiga as I have never tried it out, but at least it is
another thing to play around with. 🙂
There is a shareware voice mail program called AVM that is supposed to
work quite well with the Zoom VFX.

Jean,
It'll work fine…as will any standard external modem.
