Hi, John…
My guess is you're going to hate it <G>…but I'll ask anyway: What do you
think about the Targa 2000? I need a *total* solution (if there is such a
beast) for 3DS, video editing and Interactive Authoring.

I think for multimedia your only choice will be T2K. The MAX and PAR both work
at fixed video (NTSC) resolutions, like 720×486 or 756×486 (digital, analog).
The T2K works in 640×486 square pixel mode. Also, it directly supports
Premier, which sounds like a lot of fun if Adobe ever releases a windows
version like the MAC one.

We just got an eval of the T2k for evaluation. Pretty neat .. but now where
near the quality and resolution of the MAX or PAR. We will be targeting the
consumer/industrial video market as well as the video/training/multimedia
market with it. The fact that it represents one integrated solution (video and
sound) makes for a nice turnkey MM/DV system. We are putting a system together
around it called the DV Designer (turnkey system). The system will also
include software MPEG compression. I recently did a test by digitizing about
30 sec's of video and animaition from tape … MPEG'ed it (at only 150kB/sec
… 4.5MB for the entire 30 sec's!) and then played it back on an MPEG playback
card … looked pretty darn good. We're still playing with the system
prototype.

I'd like to hear more about this system! Is the MPEG compression software a
Targa product?
Also, you mentioned in your post to John that the quality was no where near PAR
or MAX. How about for multimedia purposes exclusively–How does it compare
with the other boards?
I'm producing a complex interactive title & I need the best thing out there.

No .. its a 3rd party product. TV is thinking about OEM'ng it .. but nothing
yet.

For MM purposes as well as pro-sumer/industrial video … the quality it
satisfactory. It certainly surpasses the quality required to generate good
MPEG, or AVI using CODEC's like Indeo or Cinepak. Like I said in the earlier
message, the system will be a great fit for someone in video/MM .. but not for
Broadcast video.

Has nothing to do with the HDD … its the operating system. They tested it
with a new Fast-Wide
.. double head Baracuda without much improvement. The fact that the disk
operation is going thru Windows is the problem. When Chicago arrives .. this
should allow great improvements with existing hardware.

Thanks for the feedback. The debate rages on, although I tend to agree with
you. Of course, I suppose I could get BOTH the PAR & T2K, but I'm sure as soon
as I manage to get them both operating on the same system, they'll be obsolete!
As for Premiere, the new version 4.0 for Windows was just released this week &
it's virtually identical to Mac version! True NTSC, SMPTE support, etc….

Adobe may have announced the product, but I wouldn't bother calling them for
sales info, as noone there even knows it exists. Figure November at the
earliest.

I did call today & you're absolutely right–the guy that answered the phone
didn't have a clue! Of course, the product has been announced in the media, but
as you mentioned, won't be available until *at least* November.
However, I have a spec sheet & it sounds virtually identical to the Mac
version.

I don't think it would be feasable to put the T2K and PAR in the same box.
Talk about peripheral overload… PC's just weren't designed to handle that
much <g>. But you'll really be wanting more than one machine to render and
work on 3DS/etc… (I use 3 simultaneously) – you could make one an MM box and
the other NTSC.

I just received the latest Siggraph reel yesterday & I've never felt more
intimidated in my life! My God, some of that stuff is truly remarkable! And I
thought the previous reel was amazing….No contest.
