I'm presently working on an animation which shows a stack of money growing
vertically. Is it illegal to scan a dollar bill for the purposes of computer
animation?

Basically, yes. However, the government does have certain sizes that money can
be copied to, I think its very tiny or very large. However, when you scan it,
it cannot be at 100%. What does that mean for you? Are your pixels 100%?
Ultimately, at your trial, what they would try and find out is your intentions.
The reason that you can have small or large images of money is because they
will not likely be used to make counterfeits. If you scan in the image and
then have your texture mapped dollar flying in a tornado, the Feds will
probably not bust you, but who knows. It might be a good idea to modify a few
details of your image of the bill so that it could not be used as a source for
counterfeit. [C
