Aspect Ratio 512×482
8 messages in this thread
We need to know the correct aspect ratio for a 512×482 TGA file in 3DS. We
suspect that neither 1.0 nor 0.82 is correct, based on distortions when those
files are brought into other programs like QFX or Topas. A CyberLunch to
whoever can help! <grin> Thanks.
Ken:
What will you be doing with the file? If you are going to print it, you
usually do want 1.0 aspect ratio, depending on the printer.
Assuming you want to output it to video, try 1.23 – the 0.82 you were asking
about was for a 756×486 file, which is Vista resolution.
Now about that lunch… <g>

Greg: The files are going to Topas for dropping to tape via LyonLamb serial
interface. I know I should be using 3DS. It's a long story and isn't 3DS's
fault. I assume everyone is reading this, too, so thanks all for your info on
aspect ratios. There were some conflicting opinions, but I think the final
consensus is for 1.23 @ 512×482 and 1.266 @ 512×486.
Happy New Year, All.
Hey Ken, it isn't a matter of consensus. It's simple math. TV aspect ratio is
4×3. If you divide 4/3 you get 1.3333. Now, whatever resolution you have, just
do the same and apply the above. For instance, 512/486=1.0535. Now divide
1.3333 by 1.0535 and you get 1.2655.
320×200 – 320/200 = 1.6 .:. 1.3333/1.6 = 0.83
512×486 – 512/486 = 1.0535 .:. 1.3333/1.0535 = 1.27
640×480 – 640/480 = 1.3333 .:. 1.3333/1.3333 = 1.00
752×486 – 752/486 = 1.5473 .:. 1.3333/1.5473 = 0.86
…
Ken – You're right Targa's are rectangular pixeled, for 512×482 the aspect is
1.23 and for 512×486 the aspect is 1.266 (This is what the Targa drivers
default to if you have RDPADI setup with rdptarga.exp) Make it a Ham and Swiss,
with Avocadoes, lettuce, sprouts and Dijon on light rye. To go! <G>
