The best $/performance in the "industrial video" S-VHS/Hi8 arena is the PAR and
an inexpensive S-VHS deck like the Panasonic 1970. The PAR, TBC IV and 1.7GB
HDD lists at about $4,200 and the 1970 lists at $1,895. So for about $6k total
.. you have realtime playback and recording with the PAR and the capability to
make VHS and S-VHS masters. If you ever need higher quality, you take you
system to a post house and dump it realtime.
The next quality level is achieved with a system like the MAX which will be
supporting "Disk on Demand" soon .. allowing the use of two Baracudda's in
tandem approaching 8MB/sec. The Targa2k is really only a descent solution if
what you want to do is VFW on your desktop with VHS-S-VHS quality (it can only
do about 2.2 MB/sec currently).

I am becomming convinced Hi8 is not the path I want to take for my particular
needs.
Do you know anything about the JVC 3/4" CR6060U recorder?
This happens to be one of the pieces I currently own and if I can use it in my
system I just might do that.

Since the suggested system paths I mentioned do not require single frame
recording from your deck
. its really up to you what you record the output on (or .. better stated ..
your clients). Certainly 3/4" will be better than VHS .. maybe not quite a good
as Hi8 and SVHS. What's important is what your clients want.
