Hi there: i am in desperate need of a special tool in 3ds which i hope can be achived through IPAS!? It is nothing fancy, but very important and Maybee impossible??!! I need to be able to get full res (screen res)_ full color(256 min with compromise) backgrounds(IFL) in the keyframer and the 3deditor for detailed and accurate animation/live action mix and rotoscoping. The present background res is only good for rough work and does not support Ifls(no automatic incrementing in KF) . It is impossible to make out detailes for accurate work! I would love to be able to see a full res/full color image of my background(moving ifls or stills) while i am modeling or more importantly when i am animating. This is extreamly important for me. I might get a pretty involved video project which will requier very accurate live/animation sync and rotoscoping. Without this option it will be impossible to do a professional looking mix. I am even willing to wait 15secs for each frames background to come up(ofcourse faster is better) but time is irrelevent for this issue at this point for me. I need to see the background clearly and model over it!!! Can this be done through IPAS?? How long would it take to implement?? Please let me know, it is very important for me! Thanks in advance Ara

Hi ARA, << Can this be done through IPAS?? >> Yes. IPAS4 will give programmers access to more screen info, viewport info, vibrant info, as well as faster bit blitting. All this would be required to display a background in color and overlay geometry. If the background really is a flic, integrating the flic read code from the Animation Support Libraries would be time/cost effective. You will be recreating the mouse UI, viewport display and keyframe data creation and modification. << How long would it take to implement?? >> Depends on the programmer. jonas[adesk]

Jonas: Thanks a lot for the reply. This it fantastic. As i told Gary, you guys never stop blowing me away. Thanks and i think i will have what i need. Great. Ara p.s. Are you still using the screen color setup i suggested or are you back to the standard screen colors? The more i work with these new colors the more i like them. They are very easy on the eye.(Given screen brightness is turned down.)

In addition to what Jonas said, the Fast Previewer/Perspective Matcher routine in R4 already DOES let you load a 256-color image into the background of a viewport, so you can finely position objects over full-color scenes. That, plus the ability to load a new image on any frame you wish, gives you all the capability you've asked for. – G

>>the ability to load a new image on any frame you wish, gives you all the capability you've asked for.<< Yes, I can load the next keyframe's background image, load the next, load the next, etc, but it'd make a -huge- time difference to have the frames scroll thru just by using the > and < buttons in the KF. We are doing a lot of video rotoscoping to 3D mesh, for game development. I've heard that one of the MAC 3D programs allows animated proxy 8-bit bkgs, and I know that Alias' PowerAnimator on the SGI does, in 24-bit. Is it too time-consuming to make this type of IPAS, or do you feel it is an unimportant feature?

Hi Mondo, Sorry disturbing you like this, but I just have one question. Is it possible to roto skope, say a caracter with his shadow on a realworld background. I have tried but 3D Studio always removes the shadow when the floor is 100% trasparent. Greetings Daniel Eriksson (Lightwave for The Amiga loads the next picture automaticly .. :-))

You can cast a shadow on a rotoscoped background if you map the video sequence to an object and place the object as a backdrop. Make sure you use spotlights and the object will receive the shadows. Release 4 is supposed to have march perspective so this will facilitate this effect.

Hi Don, Thanks for your reply. That could work in sertain cases, but unfortnately I cant use it if I want to have the shadow to fall in perspektiv. The big silicon guys use special material attribute which only shows the shadow and not the material it self. One possibility is to make a alpha mask of the scene, by using black and white in the camera scene (Black is the shadow and white the light, and then invert). Well I hope any third party release a IPAS for this purpose. Greetings Daniel

Daniel, See Don Landis' answer… have'nt tried it, but it sounds like a great idea. We haven't done shadows of 3D characters on top of video because we use Premiere(Mac) to composite video actors (in bluescreen) on top of 3DStudio backgrounds. Sounds like Don's idea'll work great.
