#About Amiga
5 messages in this thread
Hi, folks….
Hope someone can answer a few questions, basic stuff, without chiding me for my
ignorance.
Are Amiga computers still made?
If not, when not?
What is relationship between Amiga and Commodore?
Thanks.
Barry
Barry,
(1) Amigas are once again being produced now. Commodore went into bankruptcy
a year ago in April, and no machines were produced from then until the current
time. The production lines are now going, and ESCOM (purchaser of the
technology) tells us that new machines will be coming off the lines during
September.
(2) Partly covered above. No machines were made during the time that the
Commodore assets were controlled by the judges in the Bahamas. That was about
a year – and since May, the purchaser, ESCOM, has been getting things together
so they can start production again.
(3) The Amiga was designed by a group known as the Amiga Corporation. That
group ran out of money and were eagerly seeking a purchaser. Commodore made
the successful bid and gained control of the machine. They supported, updated,
and sold the machines from 1985 until 1994, when Commodore went into voluntary
bankruptcy proceedings. ESCOM purchased the Commodore property – not all of
the company, but its assets – in late April of this year, and are now making
the machines. They tell us that they will continue to support it, update it,
etc.
As you can see, since Commodore no longer exists, there is no longer any
relationship at all between Amiga and Commodore.

They're going back into production after about a year off.

Amiga lives, Commodore died, C= brand and the Amiga were bought by Escom who
say they are going to re-vitalise C= PC, Amiga and C64.

Barry,
<Are Amiga computers still made?>
Possibly… You see, the company that USED to make Amigas, Commodore, went
into liquidation and was sold to Escom of Germany. Escom has created a
subsidiary called Amiga Technologies GmbH that is about to make, or may
currently be making their first run of new machines. They are schedualed to
hit the shelves in September.
<If not, when not?>
Commodore went into liquidation in May of '94. So there were no machines
made after that date.
<What is relationship between Amiga and Commodore?>
Commodore bought the rights to the (then) Lorraine from Amiga Inc in 1985,
renamed the machine the Amiga and was manufacturing them (with some
improvements) up until they ceased existance. There is now no relationship
between the two.
