I'm doing a political ad to put in our local rag…what is the best lpi output
from my HP4m to give them a camera ready product? I usually use 90lpi & 600dpi.
This will be mainly type.

That sounds O.K., 600dpi is fine for text. 90lpi should be o.K. too, depends on
the picture and what kind of printing your "local rag" uses. Ask them what lpi
they use/recommend (or check it yourself with a screen tester) you may be able
to use higher lpi, but you will lose levels of grey as you go higher. (fewer
printer dots per halftone dot)
You could also make your printout double size and have them reduce it 50%.
(hopefully their camera person won't mess it up) That would give you the
equivalent of 1200 dpi! Adjust your lpi accordingly… 90lpi would be too high
(90×2=180lpi!) use half of your desired final lpi. Maybe 60lpi x2 = 120lpi
final.

Thanks, I'll also file it for future reference. Very good info for a non
printer trained person like moi. These people won't have a clue what I'm
talking about if I ask <G>. They can barely use their MAC computers to write.
It is printed by the "big city" (for NC, that is) newspaper, so I gues it's
standard newspaper type printer, if there is such a thing. I'm using no
pictures, so I guess I'll stay with my 90lpi.

For the correct screen ruling (LPI, Density – same thing), check with the
newspaper – the previous message about 120 LPI is nuts – there's no way a
newspaper could carry that level of screening. Most magazines only run at 133
or 120.

I use 85 lpi, the printer's default, for postscript printing from programs that
will not use the printer's default (ProPage).
