Does anyone know of a virtual memory system in the public domain that i can get ahold of? I've downloaded the VMem package by Lee Braiden, but it requires a program to be specificly written for it. I need one that will work with any program. Thank's in advance. Stephen…AutoPilot 1.80, Mosaic1.2, Gui-FTP, Gopher, ALynx, CD-Rom and three hard drives. All on one A500! get appVm.lha from the aminet it gives 1 program at a time access to Virtual memory only works on 030+ cpus It does work on os3.1 and 030 cpus it 's also Public domain, and freely usable, but to write a different version requires a fee i think It's prob better then vmm 3.0 here you can get appvm from the aminet also vmm3.1 which doesn't need a program written for it

I have just looked on the Aminet and could not find vmm3.1 anywhere. I have an 68000 and 2.1 dos., so appvm would not work for me. Where exactly do i fine vmm3.1, and will it work on an 68000? Stephen, no virtual memory program will work for you. All of them require that you have a 68020 chip with a 68551 MMU installed, or 68030 or beyond, which all have the MMU as an integral part of the chip (excepting the EC series chips). Without the MMU (Memory Management Unit) there is no way to interrupt the processor when a particular page of memory is stored on disk instead of in memory, so that the swap between the two can occur. So, you need to consider upgrading to an accelerated A500, or another machine entirely, if you are serious about using virtual memory. If you do upgrade/replace, avoid machines with 68ECxxx CPU's like the plague. They won't help you. Brian Been there…. Done that…. Better.

Brian, Thank's for all the info. I was afraid of somthing like that. I am looking into upgrading my CPU to an 68030 but have found nothing here in the states, only europe. I'm not willing to pay the overseas shipping charges and their VAT tax in Britton. If i find a used expansion board here with an 030 or even an 020, what should i look for? I know it will be an board to replace my 68000 chip, but is there an certain kind for an A500? Will one made for a 2000 work? I have many questions about compatability and the like. And i do want to upgrade. I have found some really nice 16 and 18 channal mods that my processor just won't play properly. As well as some programs that just won't work at all. Thank's for any info you can give me. Stephen…AutoPilot 1.80, Mosaic1.2, Gui-FTP, Gopher, ALynx, CD-Rom and three hard drives. All on one A500! E-Mail "savner@clubmet.metrobbs.com"

Will one made for a 2000 work?>> For about $400 you can get the CSA Derringer 030/50 mhz accelerator with a 50 mhz FPU. It plugs into the 68000 slot and was designed for the A500, but also works in the 2000 (which I have mine in.) I bought mine mail order from DeVine Computers 1-302-738-9046. M-Tec makes an 020 for the A500 for about $100. If an accelerator is made for the 2000 to plug into the Processor Slot (like the Magnum 040 or the upcoming MacroSystems 060), then no it won't work in the A500—-cause it doesn't have a processor slot. There are plenty of things out there to plug into the A500, though. I'm surprised you couldn't find anything in Europe; I understand that they still make a lot of things for the 500 over there for gamers. Waiting for the MacroSystem's 060 accelerator to be released. Thanks for the info, but i am in the states and could not find anything here. I did find some adds from the U.K. but i don't want to pay all the tax and charges. $400 is a little much for me, but maybe i can find one used from someone. Just in case, do you have the number for M-Tec for the 020 they make. An 020 would be better than what i have now and $100 isn't too much. Again, thank you for your help. I've got the 68000 blues… Stephen…AutoPilot 1.80, Mosaic1.2, Gui-FTP, Gopher, ALynx, CD-Rom and three hard drives. All on one A500! E-Mail "savner@clubmet.metrobbs.com"

<<do you have the number for M-Tec for the 020 they make.>> Not M-Tec, but try Software Hut at 1-800-93-AMIGA. They sell the Mtec 020 Turbo for the A500 w/ 0 ram for $99. An A2000 060 upgrade or a new A4000T with an 060 and AGA? That's the question. Chris Shepard: 030/50 A2000 with Toaster 4000 & MacIIfx via Emplant.

only 2000 models that work on the 500 are the csa derringers and platinums amiga users can get the cheap o mtec 500 turbo <100> it's a 020 with mmu i think

Bear in mind that VAT varies from 15% (Germany) to 17.5% (UK) and even 22% (Finland). Just like in the States (7-10%?) <g> Rafa <Motorola Inside> from Berlin, thanks to AP1.80 >…olive oil is the way to go.<

Stephen, basically, the first thing you need to establish is exactly how much money you want to spend. (I pound this point a lot!) One you have established that, pick up a copy of Amazing and start asking questions both here and of the mail order houses about the characteristics of the various options at that price point. Since you probably want to spend as little cash as possible, you'll probably want to look at one of the boards that plug into where your current CPU is located. They tend to bypass a lot of the bus logic problems that plague the daughterboard slot. One thing to pay particular attention to is that if you are serious about wanting acceleration is that the board absolutely MUST have onboard RAM. I don't care who makes it or where it goes, without its own RAM chips clocked at near the same speed as the CPU, you can forget any real speadup in your computer. Onboard cache is sweet, but it lasts only for the first loop, unless your program is by Khalid. It simply takes too long to get something from inside the normal machine memory to make any other kind of acceleration worthwhile. Essentially what you want to have is to do most of the processing in the CPU and memory on the board you install and minimize the amount of processing that takes place off of that board. You should turn the rest of your machine into a big I/O (Input/Output) processor, just as the "big guys" (mainframes) do. So look at how many applications you run at a time, how much memory they occupy, and that should determine exactly how much 32 bit memory you should buy. And then, add half again, since we ALL overload our machines <g>. Anything less, and you'll be dissappointed. I hope this helps. Brian Been there…. Done that…. Better.

Brian, Thanks for all the great info. Thats the first time i've had it explained to me in such a way that i know exactly what to look for. I have little money to spend right now so i was looking for a used one. The only magazines i can find around here are from the U.K., and i don't like their prices much. So, what i need is an 020 or 030 board to replace my CPU. One with it's own RAM. And not an EC020, ect.. Now i know what to look for. Thanks… Stephen…AutoPilot 1.80, Mosaic1.2, Gui-FTP, Gopher, ALynx, CD-Rom and three hard drives. All on one A500! E-Mail "savner@clubmet.metrobbs.com"

no vmm apps work without an mmu u need to upgrade your cou to a full 030 not ec030 to be able to use virtual memory
