#Materials Limit?
5 messages in this thread
I doing some work for realtime rendering. We're having to do a lot of
face-mapped materials. Because of this, I've just received the message:
"Can't apply material – already 255 in the scene"
Does anyone know how to get around this limitation.
If you do, could you please e-mail: sk1@netcom.com? Or just post here if
that's a pain.
3D Studio's material limit is 255 in a scene. You can't use more then this.

Sorry, this is an internal limit with the present versions of 3DS. You'll have
to be creative (I've gone as far as having a Targa composed of four separate
maps, and applying them carefully to the objects. It works!

The 255 material limit is supposed to be gone in 3DS MAX.
Mike White is right, you can only use 255 materials. However, you can always
create a second library and use VP to composite two animations into one.
