Mike, Hi, I am working with 3D Studio and I recently started to work with a fellow employee bringin stuff in from ProE. This is the biggest pain in the A** for us for some reason we have tried from ProE to Acad to 3DS a total of ten different ways and faces are constantly dropping out. ANY HELP????? GREG

Greg, I just finished doing a IGES translation then a 3DSOUT from ACAD Rel 13c creating a 200,000+ vertice file and every object translated just fine. Well thats the good news, the bad news is that R13 does not have IGES support so I have purchased the IGES Translator from Autodesk to do these type of jobs. I have not had any luck with earlier version of the IGES translator that built into the earlier releases of ACAD, so I use the IGES type 128 SURFS out from ProE. and then use the AUTOCAD IGES Translator Rel 13 to do the conversion. BTW- The software is working well in NT3.51, if you decide to go that way. Thats about all I can do for you. 🙁 -Mike

ASurf comes with an IGES Translator. Is that the same one AutoDesk sells seperately? I'm going to do a few IGES transfers.

Tim, I do not have AutoSurf, how is that program for modeling? I almost purchased AutoSurf a few months back, but when I saw MAX… well, I changed my mind real quick and decided to wait. There will still be some things that AutoSurf will excel in, like fillets, the accurate nature of the program and, mostly, the capability of generating working drawings from the model. For the most part I think MAX is going to get the job done. I can not answer your question about the similarity of the two IGES programs. You might check the IGES version number in the export utility or the latest IGES version that it will import from within AutoSurf. Make sure that you use this version or earlier in the EXPORT to IGES utility in the software you are exporting from. The different versions seems to be where the most incompatibility comes from. -Mike

Mike, >> I can not answer your question about the similarity of the two IGES programs. The standalone R13 IGES translator is the same one that comes with the R13 compatible version of AutoSurf. John

Thanks John, I think that the question was asked by Tim Krego, I'll pass it along. -Mike

John " Sounds like you will not have a problem with AutoSurf Iges, if a problem pops up,you might also try the procedure that Alan sent you. -Mike

Greg, >> faces are constantly dropping out. Have you determined that the faces are actually missing, or is this the normals pointing the wrong way problem? John ('still working on it…Disk 7 is on the way.)

John, The normals were pointed the wrong way, but because the object is so incredibly complex its a real chore to manipulate the normals to face one direction. I've already tried to Object / unify normals and it doesnt work. The problem seems to be the translation between AutoCad and the DXF it creates for 3DS. I've found a happy medium as of this point where its not awful and not superb either, this works O.K. (could be better) I'll keep trying for the best but for now everything is at least "seeable" Thanks for the help on this and the mirror issue. Greg

4DVision has a program called ProStudio which will translate between ProE and 3D Studio. Keith.

Keith, <<4DVision has a program called ProStudio which will translate between ProE and 3D Studio.>> Does it take Pro-e files in it's native format? Regards, Peter Kroko
