Love to take advantage of your offer. I just wrote an article reviewing
Meshpaint, which unfortunately has not made it into 3D Artist, and I'm just
finishing a comparative review of DMM and Key Factory. An article of mine
appeared in 3D Artist a couple of months back, describing the use of Razor Pro
and the PAR.
Would you be interested in these? I've done some screen prints that I could
easily turn into interlaced GIF89 files.
Is the web page you offer one that I can "decorate" according to taste? I've
just recently gotten into web publishing, with several commercial sites to
appear early next month, so I'm already opinionated :-).

Sorry to jump in. But I was wondering where I could get a copy of your Razor
Pro and the PAR article. I am getting ready to jump in with both feet into
that product and would be interested in what you had to say about it.

If you have access to back issues of 3D Artist Magazine, it was in issue #18.
It is the MUST HAVE magazine for 3Ders, in my view. Contact Bill Allen at

By the way, I recommended both products highly. DPS now has a new system to
replace the PAR that produces even higher quality output for the same money.

The official word from DPS is that the PVR is not replacing the PAR.
You should think of the two like this: The PAR is an animation recorder
capable of some limited non-linear video editing. The PVR is a non-linear
editing board capable of doing animation recording. Given the new faster IDE
hard drives under development the quality of the PAR will continue to improve
to equal betacam SP original. It's just that the specs of SCSI with PCI
currently supply better video quality output with the PVR. I only see the PAR
being discontinued as the ISA bus is phased out. Otherwise, the PAR will
continue to improve in quality as the hard drives improve. It's the beauty of
the DPS design.

saw the new product positioned.

I would see the reason to switch to the PVR if one already has a Pentium with
PCI empty slot and running NT and needs the increased quality NOW. DPS has
assured me they will support the PAR as long as there is ISA. An example of
this is the recent release of V1.51 to support the Quantum Fireball hard drive
that needed BLF factors in excess of what the current 1.50 software supported
to take advantage of new technology.

In talking to tech support, I was told that DPS has no plans to support
additional / larger hard drives.
I bought the PVR more for the 30 minutes+ playtime than a quality difference.

That is exactly opposite of what Brick Eckstein and Dave White told me at
SIGGRAPH. It is also exactly opposite of what they recently did. The Version
1.51 was released for the sole purpose of supporting the faster state of the
art IDE drives. Also, the development of VCR control for the PAR was
temporarily shelved because the engineer assigned to this task left the employ
of DPS and they currently have not reassigned this project. But, I was told,
it doesn't mean the project is dead. Also the PAR VCR was recently released
for windows and a win95 software package is under beta. As they told me it's
the future of ISA that will dictate the future of the PAR. My personal opinion
is that ISA is here for at least another year. Beyond that I think it will
become as scarce as NUbus on the MAC.

How are things going? I missed the beggining of this thread. So if you
wouldn't mind, which new IDE drive are you talking about. My 2217 is really
starting to act up. BTW, do you, or anyone else listening, know how Micropolis
is about replacing these drives. Am I in for a huge hassle?

Just went through it with them two months ago on a 2210. They have plenty of
warranty drives for replacement. You have two choices, Send them your drive
and they send you a new one you pay the shipping. Or, give them a credit card#
and they will Fed EX you a drive next day for $50 shipping chges. They also
bill you full list for the drive on your credit card #. Then you have 10 days
to send them the bad drive and you pay the shipping before the credit charge
gets sent in. No hassles. I would send it in for a new one if it is acting
up. You have a 5 year warrantee.

Don's right "on the money" with how Micropolis is handling things.
I currently have two Micropolis 2217a drives, and my advice is to keep plenty
of cool air blowing on these drives. They COOK. Ever since I added an internal
fan to service the drives, they run cool, and I've had no file corruption
whatsoever.
