Some of you may have noticed that I've been gone for about eight weeks. During that "sabbatical" I lost a hard disk and was unable to recover the data (1280 Meg) from backup tapes. Specifically, I lost addresses added to my WinCIM address-file after April 94. I would appreciate E-mail from individuals I met after that date. With WinCIM I can easily copy "From:" addresses to the address-file. Also, if I haven't responded to E-mail you've sent me recently, please send it to me again. Finally, I would like to get forum messages posted during the last year. I'm particularly interested in: – Scripts – Animator Pro/Studio – IPAS usage Thanks in advance! (In return, I'll try to get back into uploading mode ASAP.) Ed K.

<Ed: Its terrific to have you back on-line!> Thanks for the welcome Bob! What have you been doing? I see the showcase libraries are in full use. Are we supposed to upload to "New files" or to specific libraries? Ed K

Ed, sorry to hear about your troubles. Glad to have you back though :()

<sorry to hear about your troubles.> Thanks. As soon as I replace the drive I'll have 1260 meg. available for new stuff (funny how that doesn't seem to be a lot any more). I want to look into outfits that restore data from bad drives. Any suggestions? Ed K.

Ed, >> I want to look into outfits that restore data from bad drives. Any suggestions? << I think I've seen some ads in the back of computer magazines.

<< .. outfits that restore data from bad drives. … I think I've seen some ads in the back of computer magazines. > >> Thanks! I found several (they were there all along, but I never noticed them<g>). I was surprised to see very little activity in the scripts section. Are scripts falling out of favor? I've been doing my work (particle systems) mostly with IPASes. Compiling is pretty quit, and the improvement in performance is significant. What keeps you entertained these days? Done any more POCO stuff? Ed K

Ed, >> surprised to see very little activity in the scripts section. Are scripts falling out of favor? << I think it's only a few people who've got into them. It's a bit intimidating at first for non-programmers, but once they try to (or are forced into) writing them they soon see the power – I think people's work would actually improve if they got into it. The people who are using them just don't seem to talk about it much. I write several for each project I work on now, but they are just quick and dirty routines that would probably be useless for any one but me. I have a bunch of stuff that I could upload as samples but it's just a matter of taking the time to do it and there's certainly no time to clean it up for public usefulness. >> I've been doing my work (particle systems) mostly with IPASes. Compiling is pretty quit, and the improvement in performance is significant. >> cool. I trust you'll have samples one of these days. >> What keeps you entertained these days? Done any more POCO stuff? << no POCO, but I'm into L-systems and L-objects with the new product World Builder and the old stand-by, Yost's Silicon Garden. World Builder is incredibly deep and we are trying to use it for a Japanese commercial. Different layers of the commercial will be done in Renderman, Alias, 3ds, World Builder, and VS (MetroLight's own renderer) all matched to the same camera and lighting (theoretically). We've done another commercial for Korea and some film work for "Virtuosity". Very busy.

Your work sounds very interesting. (Maybe one of these days I should come out of retirement.) <<< I've been doing my work (particle systems) mostly with IPASes. Compiling is pretty quit, and the improvement in performance is significant. >> cool. I trust you'll have samples one of these days.> I uploaded one before loosing my hard-drive: 1C02.ZIP. Ed

<Sorry to hear about you HD problem… been hearing a lot about that lately. > IDE hard-drive capacities seemed to be increasing rapidly. Maybe quality is suffering. My problem happened when I took my PC on a car trip. I've done that many times before without any problems. But this was the first time with a 1260 meg drive. Ed K

Ed – Nice to see you back. I always enjoy getting a first crack at the library files you upload and seeing what new and interesting ways you have come up with blowing yourself into "pieces" or oozing all over the screen <G> Wonder if I would ever recognize you in person? Yes please upload to the New Files library of ASHOWCASE. You can't get into any of the others for upload anyway. The only archive I know that exists of the last years messages would be at Autodesk Product Support in San Rafael. Unless some zealous member has them all. We are currently running about a 3 week scroll rate on the forum so you can only pick up that much backwards here. Anne

<Nice to see you back. But you are spoiling me and I'll be expecting your feedback when I get back into production. I can't tell you what's next. I don't know myself. Right know I'm playing with Animator Studio, AutoCAD and reviewing a couple of IPASes for Planet Studio. I suspect I'll take off on a tangent. When it happens you'll get first crack as usual. Ed K.
