Hi,
I've got the Pinnacle 1000 CD recorder and it works perfect. If your running an
Adaptec 2940 PCI card and have it connected externally, make sure you do Ctrl-A
after boot and at the Adaptec banner to enter the SCSI control section. Make
sure that external termination is off so that the SCSI cand can query the
external devices. Also look and see that you have the latest Adaptec SCSI
driver, version 3.3 or later. You can download here on Cserve if you don't have
it.
A note on cutting CDs, try 1X speed to start with. If you have a slow hard
disk, the buffer sometimes can't keep up with the recorder. Once you interrupt
the data stream its goodbye CD-ROM!
We also run this on a Future Domain SCSI card and its fine.
I'm using it to cut Authorware CD-ROM CBT disks. If I can help you just drop me

How well do these burners do with audio? And at what ratess will they write?

Their fine with audio, although you cannot record directly from an audio cd to
the Pinnacle. What I do is record the audio track from the CD to the hard disk
as a wav file, then edit them and record them back to the Pinnacle. To maintain
the same quality it best to use a Turtle Beach Monterey card as is has the best
circuitry. The Sound Blasters have some drop off on both ends of the audio
spectrum.
I'm going to get an additional recorder, but I'll get a quad speed this time,
either the JVC or Pioneer drive.

But… how fast can you record the audio onto CD? I heard CD ROM writers take
a long time to write data, and even longer to write audio tracks. My question
is: just how long?

Recording take the standard time of CD-ROM's: single speed is 150k/sec, double
speed 300k/sec, quad speed 600k/sec and so forth. The data is "fixed-up",
ordered and collated by the computer before its recorded to maintain a steady
stream of data to the write buffer, thats the fast part. The recording is the
slow part because of the limitation of the CD-ROM technology right now. I think
when the 6X devices get here, and the 8X ones too, this will be more of an
everyday thing. Right now its still limited to those specialized people who
need it.
It can take a loooooong time to record at single speed but its OK for one-off
recording. Thats why I'll get a quad speed recorder next time. The Pinnacle was
the most affordable thing at the time and was a great way to start with
recording, especially now the the Pinnacle price has dropped below $1300. Also
the blank CD-ROMs have dropped in price. I getting them for $8 a piece out of
Computer Shopper.

Wasn't sure if they could WRITE as fast as a normal CD could READ…

I would like to get some info on the Turtle Beach Monterey. I'm looking for a
decent sound card on my NT system. Currently I have a Ultrasound Max but there
are no drivers for NT 🙁 Does the Turtle Beach comes with NT drivers and is
it SB compatible ? Could you also give me a price tag ?

Turtle Beach is writing the drivers for NT as we speak. The card is around $350
mail order. The current 16-bit drivers are not SB compatible buts thats only an
issue for DOS applications like the games. Myst and other windows applications
run fine. A lot of the games now have the TB cards as an option.
If you need to do any kind of serious sound work the TB card is the best way to
go.

Wonder if you can run 2 sound cards concurrently?
I'm looking to do some serious voice-over work, so a TB is undoubtedly in my
future. Just need to get a decent microphone and some decent software, too…

Yes you can run two cards for four input channels!
The windows drivers take a dedicated chunk of memory so you can install two
different cards and two drivers. Call TB and talk to them.
What I've been doing is recording individual tracks onto the hard disk, then
mixing them with Razor Pro, Wave for Windows, or Quad Studio.
