I've got the 8505XL too – what a chunk of change$$$!!! But it's supposed to be
the best. What's your secret <G>? I still can't get it to work right.
What bus is it on?
Any way to turn off compression? If necessary…
Backup.rexx has been working??
Any restore problems?

I connect the 8505XL to Flyer C as the first SCSI device in the chain. I then
daisy chain my audio drive to the 8505. I use the backup and restore .rexx
files in the Rexx folder.
On restoring a 50-minute project with over 400 croutons, two clips (one audio
only, one video) came back corrupted. One I left out. The other I
redigitized.
I haven't figured out compression on/off yet.

I am using the 8505XL also to backup and restore Flyer projects. When I insert
an Exabyte tape cartridge in the drive, the middle LED comes on orange
indicating compression is active. I have read the manual carefully for any
method of turning off compression, but so far I have been able to find no way
to do this. Apparently compression has to be turned off by the software and
NewTek's Backup.ARexx software makes no provision for turning off compression.
I would greatly appreciate learning from you if you succeed in finding a way to
turn off compression of the 8505XL tape drive.
My success at backing up and restoring projects parallels your. I backed up a
42 minute project then removed it from the drive. Upon restoring, two clips
would not play and had to be redigitized. This was under 4.04B Flyer software.
I have backed up two projects under 4.06, but, to date, I have not had an
opportunity to restore them and check to see how they play.

The 8505XL I've used (twice only) belongs to someone else. I haven't seen the
manual and don't remember which lights were on/off. I doubt I'll find a
"compression off" trick the next time I use it if you haven't already.
Time for the NewTek backup/restore code programmer to come out of the dungeon
and respond to this one.

Talked to the guys at Exabyte – compression should be handled by the backup /
restore software. Oh well…

You must have missed my message 122050 of a few days ago — If you call
1-800-392-8273 (Exabyte sales) You can order part number 313183-000 which is a
tape cartridge (with instructions) which when played, turns off compression on
the Exabyte. The cost is $22. Part number 313167-000 (at the same price) can
be used to turn compression back on.

James, I do the same as Mark. I have it first in the chain with audio. I do
not believe My stuff is getting compressed. Best results in restoring has been
reformatting the drives and starting with clean drives. I have not restored on
4.06 yet.
I dont know wether they fixed this or not but with 4.04b you could not have a
space in the project name…or it just would not run the rexx.
If the tape drive was compressing I doubt if you could get your video images
back….???

I have an HP C1533….. DDS-2… I'm not sure if it sucks or not but the first
mini test we did worked fine…. on ours the compression is some internal thing
inside the drive that my partner diddles with… who knows what the hell he's
doing in there….
we bought the gizmo and then went through a 5 project binge…it scares me that
sometimes it don't work right on the restore….
PROGRAMMERS NOTE!!!!!
make 3 features for back up.
1- Backup as it is…..Backs up all the related clips….
2- Back up all….. Backs up the project and unused clips….
3- Back up drives….. Pick any drive and backthe thing up…(includeing not
flyer drives….)
PLEASE do this …. it would be cool!!!!

YES…this way we don't have to search for unused clips. Many of us will only
keep one project on the system at a time and need to shift projects in and out
to go from one project to another. Having to spend time figuring out which
clips have not been used in the project yet is a pain.

Would this be backing up the project and ALL the remaining clips on the video
drives. How else would the backup program know what other clips are associated
with the project, but were not used? Use some common naming convention? Just a
few thoughts.

Yep…Not everyone would use it, but many would.
I see this not for archiving per se, but for shifting whole projects on and off
the system.
Work on project A, can't do any more for now (waiting for material due in next
week)…so shift that project out and shift in project B. And so on.

don't even get me started on "Searching for unused clips"…In my opinion the
lower half of the screen should be a data base and not a file directory… I
want features like
find all clips that have been used…
find all clips unused…
Find all clips longer then (insert time amount here)
Find all clips that contain (insert portion of file name here)
Find all clips with (insert portion of comment string here)
Tell me these features wouldn't kick!!!!

I SURE SECOND THAT MOTION…ever get the feeling that they dont really have any
editors over there doing real things with the flier?

how about:
find last clip made…..so that you could delete a clip to free up space
without reoganizing.
Let's not forget….show clips in order that they were made.

Another good suggestion. Your parents must have loved having you around the
house helping them out here and there with fresh ideas. :>)
I've resorted to going to workbench to look at dates for the last clip made.
Quite a pain with a full drive.

The current Flyer software is a good start, but if it's ever going to reach its
full potential, NewTek will have to be open to a major rethink of the
interface. It's OK now, it could be great.
The lower half of the screen should not only allow you to have the options you
describe, but should also have many other functions. First, to replace the
current pop-up requesters. Then to add many new options in handling and
adjusting the clips.
Some of the functions you describe I believe are found in the Flight Gear
package. I think maybe one or two I've heard Newtek may be planning for future
upgrades.

I think Atomic Toaster's Flite Gear is going this way. Harrold already claims
that you can save all manner of Flyer croutons in Flite Gear and recall them by
search parameters. He has it searching comment fields to group croutons by key
words. It should be an easy addon to have it search on crouton specs. I'll pass
the idea on to him.

Have you heard about FG Hi-8 (control L) module. Harold was supposed to send it
to me, never did, and when I called him he said it didn't work yet.
Is anyone using this? I thought someone said they were.
Will pass this on to the programmers.

pleae see mycomment about the lower half of the screen working more like a
database then a file directory…. it would be a REAL IMPROVEMENT. I haven't
seen this function on other editors yet…but I don't get out much either
