#hopeless text bevels
7 messages in this thread
I'm having no end of trouble adding bevels to text in the lofter. Just about
any bevel I try (except miniscule ones) with just about any font generates
illegal geometry and the thing wont loft. Nearly every 3D program on the Mac
will generate automatically beveled text without any of this headache and I've
taken to cross-modelling text from the Mac to 3DS. What's the trick?
Please help,

I find it often helps to bevel OUT rather than in…
Also watch out for trying to bevel with the limits set larger than the text
size! It can be confusing and a triffle picky but it's quite good once you
get the hang.

John,
Instead of doing the bevels in the Lofter use the 2D Shaper's Outline command
along with the Lofter to create the bevel.

>>…bevel problems…
One solution for solving bevel problems is to scale the text in the Shaper to a
HUGE size (1 – 2,000 x or more). That gives you more room for error. Once the
beveled text is lofted and in the 3D Editor, you can scale it down to the
proper size.
The "trick" is that the 0-100 default range of the bevel deformation grid is in
UNITS, while it is easy to mistake it for a percentage.
So, you have to examine your text shape's size and judge what would be a proper
bevel , remembering that Bevel offsets its effect away from the original shape.
Examining the tightest occurance within any of the characters will yield the
correct size for the entire string.

p.s. It's easy to get Bevel wrong in the begining <g>.
Thanks for all the great advice you guys! If this is the kind of user support
generally for 3DS, I'm glad I switched!!!
Cheers,
John.
Glad I could help.
