I'm hoping that you or Gus can help with an unusual problem with an EVO-9650. A
university professor I am working with has this unit and is running it with the
EVO driver that shipped with 3ds4.
All day today he has been trying to record an animation and it quits after any
30 frames (0-30 or 90-120 doesn't make a difference.)
The message being returned is something like "Unknown response from VTR –
Cancel, retry"
I have no clue why it would freeze after 30 frames.

Are you sure this deck supports single frame? I have the EVO 9850 deck and it
does not support single frame. after 30 frames or so it looses it's place in
SMPTE and dies as you have noted. Try asking Sony also.

We got it. The tape was formatted on a different 9650. Formatting a new tape
cured the problem.

Hi Greg,
I'm still working on our prevoius laserdisk purchase issue, but I had another
question and saw your response here so I thought i'd ask.
I'm am interested on any information in regards to a V-LAN controlled
single-frame system. In other words from your experience which VCR's have
proven to be the most reliable for single-frame accuracy.
As most people I would like to start on the least expensive route, but reliable
transfer is the utmost so I am prepared to look higher in the price range.
S-VHS is the preferrable format for now as we will not need broadcast quality
but I would still expect a fairly good output able to withstand a generation or
two of dubbing, So if SP is the only way, it still can be an option. I have
priced the Sony UVW 1800 just to get an idea of the costs.
BTW – This will not be 3D studio output. It will be from Wavefront off an SGI
Indigo2
so PAR cards and the like are not an option at this time, at least I dont think
so.

We got away from single frame early, between using laser disks and DDRs, we got
the quality we needed and the speed we wanted. The Sony UVW-1800 is pretty
good, and you might also want to look into their new UVW-1700 which has RGB in
and out in addition to component, and it's cheaper, too!

Are there any other differences between the 1700 and 1800? How much cheaper.

I believe that the PVW-1700 cannot do an audio insert, but aside from that, I
think they are substantially the same. (But don't quote me on that!)
How much cheaper.
Around $1,000 or so, you'd have to check with a dealer for current pricing.
I do know that Sony has a 3DS3/4/MAX ADI driver for it that they are including
free. (I should know, we wrote it for them!)
