I'm next to positive there's something suitable on the WCT — the only catch possibly being that it isn't seamless. If so, you can take it into Kai's Power Tools and use the seamless texturing routine to create one in about a minute. If you don't have KPT and find something you like on the WCT, I'd be glad to make it seamless for you and upload it here (assuming Anne thinks it's okay). But anyone who needs seamless textures really needs KPT (if nothing more you could create a nicely cracked surface yourself and then make it seamless) — at less than $100 I find it an indispensible 3DS tool.

Mike, I'm not familiar with "WCT" what is it? I am going to get Kai's Power Tools, I was waiting for the Win95 ver, presently it does'nt work with Photoshop 3. Thanks for your help. As soon as I find out what "WCT" is I'll go check it out. Tony

PMJI, but WCT is the World Creating Toolkit CD-ROM that comes with 3DS. About your statement regarding KPT, do you mean that you're now running Photoshop 3 under Win95, but KPT doesn't work (under Win95)? SCL

OH! WCT boy do I feel stupid. I never heard anybody call the World Creating Toolkit "WCT" Your right there is a texture of dry cracking mud in the Topical sub directory that will do just fine, and your right it is'nt seamless. I am going to call HSC and see if the have an upgrade.

Mike, Thanks for your advice. I did'nt realize "wct" was the World Creating Toolkit, boy I feel silly! Your right what I'm looking for is there. In the topical sub directory there is a file called "mud001" It's exactly what I'm looking for, but it is'nt seameless. I do have KPT ver 2.0, but it does'nt work with Photoshop 3.0 under win95. I am going to call HSC and find out if they have an upgrade yet. Problem is 16 bit plug-in w/32 bit program. If you could make a seameless texture out of that file it would be a life saver. let me know, thanks. How is your KPT working? what software are you running it with?

I'll make a seamless texture out of it tonight, Anthony, but we'll have to ask Anne if it's okay for me to upload it (here or in ASHOWCASE) — the rights to the original texture certainly don't belong to me. (Anne, consider this a question).

Mike – Ack – a copyright question? <G> If you are copying someone else's work to sue in your own image and want to upload here the answer is you must have their permission to do so. Usually an email to a person gets an enthusiastic yes and a request to include their name as the source. Most folks love for their work to be shown off. If by a texture you mean something from a printed or electronic source if it is copyrighted, you must have permission also. If you are looking at an image and making your own work my understanding is that you can do so within limits. I for example can look at a mariner's compass quilt and use it as inspiration for a work of my own. I cannot copy one of Judy Mathieson's quilts and call it my own work for example. The original mariner's compass idea is lost in antiquity and belongs to no one as an object. I'm not an intellectual property lawyer and have a rudimentary understanding of copyright. Did that help at all or make it worse? <G> Anne

Actually, Anne, I was referring to uploading an "altered" texture off of WCT, for someone here who wanted it seamless. It's "MUD001" in the "Topical" directory on WCT, and the person here (who found the texture so I assume he does indeed have the WCT) doesn't have the ability to make it seamless. So… Who do we ask about the WCT? (It may be moot — the image wasn't the greatest in the world for tiling anyway).

Mike – don't know! But I'll try to find out about altering a texture off of WCT. Isn't copyright fun <G> Anne

You can also use Photoshop to make something seemless, using the offset filter. It's slower than KPT, but more people have Photoshop. – Neil

Neil, I was'nt aware of that Neil, Thanks I'll give it a try. Tony

I did make a seamless texture out of MUD001, but Anne has to okay me uploading it (or, if you want to pay what it will cost for a 167K file, I could send it direct). It might not be worth it to you, though. For the best seamless approach, you really need a smaller pattern than MUD001 has — with only around 10 distinct "cracked areas" even a seamless approach betrays the repetition. I suspect there are better textures around (or you can make your own — it seems to me that I read about someone using MARBLE.SXP as a bump and texture map that looked exactly like what you want — even has the advantage of being to animate it over time).

Thanks for your help mike. I am new to Compuserve, I've been on American On LIne for about 4 years now and I still am, I have a seperate Compuserve account because it has a good 3D Studio and Autocad forum. From what I'm used to on AOL, is that when you send E-Mail you can just attach a file, can this be done here. If so please send the file I'll give it a look and see if I can use it. It sounds like I'm just going to have to make my own texture. Or take a drive out to Arizona and take some pictures.. 🙂 Thanks again for all your help.
