I've used Apple's LW+, TI's 2115, and AST's Turbo Laser printers. Of these, the Apple is tops, mainly because of it's crisper type and screens…solid blacks are mediocre though. The TI was pretty good, but more expensive and without the built-in fonts I wanted. The AST is a dog (personal opinion) mainly because it can't handle type well at all. It prints soooooo black that it becomes difficult to distinguish between regular and bold face, especially after a document is offset printed. The new Apple line of printers are good from reports of heavy (and picky) users. You might want to pose the same question on the Aldus Forum…many, many laser printer user are hanging out there. The LW+'s problem with blacks is really no big deal as most printers can and will drop a ruby in place for very little. -Darryl

I want to reinforce what you said about the LaserWriter Plus black fill performance: We do dozens of software manuals a year that use black filled head frames, boxes, etc. and they fill in just fine when the printer shoots them. Have never had a problem with even just reproing the output: A typical repro machine (we use a Gestetner/Mita 2130Z) fills in the blacks really well. The LaserWriter Plus black fill is only a problem when looking directly at its output. Steve Stough
