The NeXT laser printer is just a dumb engine, and the computer contains a
version of PostScript. So anything that uses PostScript, works with his
laser engine, and I'm sure there's a way to intercept the PS output before
it gets sent to the PS interpreter and raster engine… So it's a smart
arrangement.
I keep reading about a program for that computer with the wrong first
letter in its name. The rogram is called GoScript; it does Postscript
formatting in t he machine's memory and lets most any printer do Postscript
output they say. I sure wish we had that for the Amiga. It is quite
inexpensive – around $100 if memory serves correctly.
GoScript is $195, and there are several other PostScript script software
clones in the under-$500 range for the PC. There are one or two for the
Mac, too, including a screen-viewer. They have screen-previewers for HP
LaserJet output, too. Unfortunately, most are slow, and some are buggy. A
recent computer magazine in the pile on my table has a comparison of
several; none were perfect as a LaserWriter, unfortunately. I know several
people running GoScript on their BridgeBoards, and it's rather slow, and
woofs on big image operations.
