#Pro MIDI Studio

In Pro MIDI Studio, when a track is looped, apparently, velocity
information is no longer sent. The first time through is fine, only when it
loops does it start to sound flat.
On a drum hot drum track through the EPS, a lot of 127 velocities, the
output is 6 dB higher the first time through than on the loop. Has anyone else
encountered this? Is there anyway to change it?
Barry
Barry,
RE: SoundScape velocity problem
I've never experienced that particular problem, but, I've always had the best
luck with looped tracks when I started with the supplied metronome track and
modified that.
If you'll E-Plex me the track I'll try it out and see if I can come up with
something.
David
David,
How do you send 8 bit data through the E-plex System?
Barry
Barry,
First zoo (or arc, or lharc) the file(s) to get a compressed module to send. If
you use zoo or lharc, it will keep the file names intact.
Next, if you have Whap!, click the 'U'pload box under EasyPlex and fill in my
ppn 72017,1130 when asked to to so. (This is the easy way! 8)
If not using Whap! you can upload the file similar to the way that you upload a
file to the forum DL's. You select Upload, then a protocol, and do whatever
that protocol requires. (CIS-B is, of course, the easiest to use.)
I'll be watching for it. 8)
David
David,
First thanks for your help. It seems though that I forgot the first rule
of working with computers-when they start acting strange re-boot _everything_
and start over. As you remember, my problem was with an endless loop. I must
have goofed if you didn't end up with a track that looped endlessly, I had no
trouble doing that (after 4 hours of cursing Todor Fay and the SoundScape
manual). The problem was that after one trip through the loop, velocity was no
longer sent to the EPS and it sounded strange and flat after that. However,
today when I reopened the environment, everything was fine. It looped
endlessly, and endlessly sent velocity. You mention that you've never created
an endless loop on the "edit sequence" window. It's not difficult, but the
manual is wrong. All you really had to do is go to the manual, page 90, follow
instructions 1-4 and _IGNORE_ 5-it's 100% wrong! "Next", on the edit page,
should be set to whatever the current number is, _plus_ the number of clocks
you want between the current number and the beginning of the loop. See, it's
easy, any trouble, just let me know.
Do me a favor though, tell me the difference between a song and a sequence
in SoundScape? I've never worked with songs, just sequences and environments.
Do you have an EPS? If so I've got two questions. Do you know of a visual
sample editor for it (Amiga)? The reason It took so long for me to get back to
you is that I've spent the last week or so cursing it as I tried to scroll back
and forth between it's, what, 150 commands? On that little display yet! Second
question, any experience/advice hooking up a hard drive to one? Thanks again
for all your help.
Barry
Barry,
Now that you mention it, I do remember going over that in the manual. I'd
forgotten about it since I don't use it much. Amazing how much trouble dropping
a zero can cause. (The number in instruction 5 should have been 1000, not 100.)
The song part of the tape deck is one of the most powerful parts of SoundScape,
and, I agree that the docs are obscure. It basically puts you in control of
when any of the sequences are played in the song. You can transpose for a key
change, then transpose back again later. The Song can be nice for using a basic
pattern many times, but, at certain intervals, introducing another variation.
When there is a Song window set up for a track, the sequence attached to that
track does not play by itself anymore. The Song takes over. You can have a song
window on an empty Sequence track, and then import other tracks' sequences into
it using the List Store. The Song Window gives you a powerful tool to compose
with segments, instead of sequencing everything separately. I believe that
Texture uses this type of editing. Check out how I used the Song Window to get
multiple repeats of of your EPS track. The start time of any could have been
altered, or another variation could have been used for any one of them.
Sorry, but I don't have an EPS. Maybe one of the other members, or somebody in
the MIDI forum can help. If you have Music-X and have good documentation of the
EPS Sys-Ex implementation, you might be able to use Music-X for your

storage requirements instead of a hard drive. Can't really help on the Sample
Editor at the moment, though.
Glad you got things going. 8)
David
OK, Dave. I'm going to have to take a closer look at that sequence you sent me
(oops, song). Thanks for the suggestions, I'll check them out.
Barry
I can't help you with the hard drive, but just about any sample editor that is
compatible with the MIDI Sample Dump Standard should work with the EPS.
The problem is that the EPS doesn't support the MIDI sample dump standard. I
know there's at least one sample editor for it on IBM/compatibles, so there
must be some way of doing it.
Barry
Well, I haven't had any problem with the EPS not supporting SDS. I used to to
direct transfers of samples between a Yamaha TX16W, an Emax SE, and the EPS
without too many problems.
Good, how to you get the EPS to do a sample dump. Nothing in the manual about
it-that I've seen anyway, and I've been told that it doesn't support the
standard sample dump format. But maybe that was in the early releases of the
OS?
Barry
I don't remeber if you can do it from the front panel – when I did the
Emax-TX16-EPS stuff, it was always via the computer with SDS request packets.
Let me look and see – I won't get a chance to look at an EPS 'till tomorrow.
Barry,
You may want to talk with Bill Lewis 76701,35. He owns (at least one) EPS and
is active in writing for the TransHacker (the Ensoinq mag. Hope I got the name
right 🙂
I don't have an EPS, so I'm not about this.. Does it send and recieve
standard sample dump format? If so, there is a program out for the Amiga that
will handle it. Hmm.. where IS that text file? Ah, here it is:
Dissidents Sample-Editing Software: MIDI Sample Wrench allows you to upload
samples from MIDI based samplers or disk files, modify them and download the
results to the source machine or other samplers that support the MIDI sample
dump standard. Sample size is limited only by available memory. Internal Amiga
sample resolution is 16 bit. Full cut and paste editing is available, along
with free-hand drawing and sound mixing tools. Other functions include digital
equalization, 50-point time-scalable envelope generation, signal compression,
sample-rate conversion, and cross-fade looping. You can preview samples using
the Amiga's internal voices, or by downloading the file to a sampler and
triggering the sound from the Amiga keyboard. The program supports
multitasking. $279.00. Dissidents 730 Dawes Ave. Utica, NY 13502 Voice (315)

Also, interesting news from the folks at Turtle Beach Software (the guys who
had to be parked next to a Commodore booth at a trade show to find out about
the Amiga!) and SoundQuest. Seems that after getting a good look at

what the Amiga can do, Turtle Beach has asked SoundQuest to port their popular
sample editor to the Amiga. No word on a release date as of yet.
Hope this helps…
Allen
The EPS does _not_ support the standard sample dump. But there must be some way
to do it. Turtle Beach has an IBM based sample editor for the EPS. Is that what
you were talking about getting ported?
