#A1000 questions

I've been out of the Amiga picture for a while now, but I recently dusted off
my 1000. Now I want to get caught up on the Amiga track as quickly as
possible. I'd appreciate it if I could get some answers to the following
questions. Please excuse any stupidity on my part — it's been a while.
1. I'm looking for a SCSI controller board for my Zorro II card cage (Escort
2 by Expansion Technologies). I would be interested in buying a used
board, if it is still supported. I assume there is no way to autoboot on
a 1000; is this correct?
2. I have Lattice C 4.0 (and several previous versions), but I've never
received an upgrade notice for 5.x. I'd like to upgrade — does anyone
know the cost? Also, can I get a discount on C++? Is it a compiler or
preprocessor?

3. What is the recommended way (cost-wise, compatibility-wise) for me to
upgrade to a 68020/30? I currently have a 68010.
4. I know the following doesn't really pertain to my 1000, but I'm curious.
What can I expect from C= concerning new hires losta colors non-interlaced
video modes? When? When is WB 1.4 due?

I'll just cover your second question and let others cover the rest. An
upgrade from 4.0 of Lattice C to 5.0 costs $75. Yes there is a discount on C++
for Lattice C owners. C++ lists for $250, but C owners can buy it from Lattice
for $200. I don't believe John Toebes is on CompuServe, but I'll let him know
you said hello. 🙂

Thanks, Mike. Yeah, I knew John probably wasn't on CIS, but I posted the same
note to Usenet, and I believe he is on there (somewhere). By the way, what can
you tell me about Lattice C++? Is it a true C++ compiler?

I do believe John is on Usenet. Lattice C++ is a preprocessor that generates
C code which our C compiler then compiles. It lists at $250, but is available
to Lattice C owners for $200 ( a $50 discount). If you have any more questions,
just ask.

Taking those one at a time:
1) With 1.3, you will have to boot the first time with kickstart, but not
with workbench. There are some boards, I believe including the CMI Processor
Accelerator (14.28MHz 68000), which offer a slot for a kickstart ROM on the
1000. With that you should have no problem.
2) As lattice people are around us, I'll let them handle pricing. 5.02 is
current with 5.04 around the corner.
3) If you are a hacker (soldering, …) you can build a lucas board which
gives you full 32bit everything. CSA has a product called the midget racer
which replaces the 68000 with a 68020 slowed down to 7.14MHz (to prevent a lot
of problems) and a math coprocessor. With a 16 MHZ coprocessor you can usually
find it for $520. The speedup isn't really there unless you are using something
that uses the 68881 a lot.
4) There are frame buffers, I think one is from mimetics. Commodore is
coming out with a 1024×1024 screen with 256 colors out of a palette of 16.7
million colors and an overlay of four colors for rapid animation board. It
appears to be expensive. 1.4? It'll be out hopefully by Easter. It will give
640×400 non-interlaced (on multisyncs) but limited to 4 colors out of 64.
640×800 interlaced same restrictions. Also, 1280×200 and x400 for regular
monitors, same color restrictions. For a detailed look at 1.4, see the
