#Long pages

Does anyone know of a Postscript printer that will print an 8 1/2" X 17" page?
Better yet, how about an 11" X 17" page. Can any Postscript lasers print
longer than 14"?
Yes, there is a venerable old printer called the VT600W, made by Varityper,
which will print 11×17, and at 600dpi to boot. The downside is that it costs
$22,000, and its old-technology engine literally requires monthly service.
It may be heresy to mention, and I'm not predisposed to recommend clones, but I
think there are "alternative" PS-compatible printers from firms like Tegra and
Birmy which will fit your bill. None of those are cheap, either.

George! Hang on a second…
Not but this afternoon (yes, on a Saturday…) was I reminded by my QMS rep
about a printer that I've known about for a while but is only recently shipping
in volume – the QMS PS-2200. It is 300 dpi, and readily handles 11×17. The "22"
of 2200 stands for 22 pages/minute, which is the engine rating for 8-1/2×11,
but I suspect, knowing QMS rather well, that real-world output is in the 15
page/minute range (which is still darn fast). The printer has a SCSI interface
to allow hard-disk storage of download fonts like the LaserWriter II/NTX.
I recommend this company and this printer, which has a price of $11,995.

Thanks 1,000,000 for the info on the QMS Postscript printer. It sounds exactly
like what I am looking for.
