#Videolinx Frame Buffer??

I'm still a little in the dark, here. What does TARGA+ have that the
videolinx doesn't? It can output images at 746 x 484 in 24 bits and I
understand that the targa+ cannot do this – isn't it limited to 512 x 480
in 32 bits depth. Is it the way the image is output that affects the final
image quality or is it the output resolution that has a greater effect. My
plan was to output to 3/4" frame-by-frame using a software tape controller
with RS422 output – so I wouldn't be directly using the ntsc/out of the
videolinx.
God this is complicated I wish I understood all the issues involved a
little better.

First you should run down to your local bookstore and get a copy of
"Autocad 3D design and presentation" by Bousquet & Hester. It goes a long
way into discussing video options for animation.
The Videolynx will work for what you want but the Targa+ has a much better
composite video encoder if you choose to go that way. It also has SVHS
output as well as RGBS out for connection to a broadcast quality encoder or
transcoder as the case may be. If you don't think you'll ever do
professional quality animation (read: SVHS, BetacamSP or 1") you'll
probbably be very happy with Videolynx.

Thanks for your reply. I think this subject requires more study on my part
because I do want to produce professional or broadcast quality animation. I
remember from a thread about a month ago between Kevin Krell and someone
else that to get "broadcast quality" you would need a Truevision ATVISTA
rather than a TARGA+ to get 756*486 resolution in 32 bits.

You can get broadcast quality from a Targa+! The Vista card does allow the
higher resolution but isn't absolutly required. I've done broadcast work @
512x486x24 and it looks great. Granted 756×486 would look better, but it
would also require longer rendering times and _larger_ file sizes.
Don't worry, hang out here long enough and it will start to come together.

Martin,
Your animation controller does not include the video signal, only
the tape control. You must connect your card video to the input of the
video tape recorder. Thus the NTSC signal from the vidoelinx isn't going
to be tremendously exciting. It would be better if you could use either
S-VHS, or RGB (and encode to NTSC composite, or transcode to S-VHS or
BetaCAM Y/C). The Targa+ will have better NTSC composite. You are correct
that the Targa+ is limited to 512x486X24-bit or 756X486X16-bit.

So what your saying, if I understand you correctly, is that the TARGA+ will
produce a better end result because it has better composite NTSC even
though it's maximum resolution at 24bit is lower than the videolinx?
