Does anyone know what the current state-of-the-art is in showing live video
(say from a VCR or video disk) on a computer monitor? I've seen IBM ads
that show a monitor with a window open, and live video (I think a shuttle
launch) is being shown in the window, while other 'computer stuff' occupies
the rest of the monitor.
What hardware/software is required to pull this off?

the videologic dva-4000 will take input from a laser disk or vcr in s-vhs
or ntsc and display it in a window in windows or on your screen in what
ever pos you like. what i like to do is setup a window on my screen say
320×240 and watch the news while i do my work. i don't get a lot of work
done but i know whats going on in the world. you can also freeze a frame
and save it as a targa file. you can also control the laser disk or vcr if
they have the appropiate control-s in and out. this is good for multimedia
apps when you need a certain frame or frames to see. it is also software
controlled so you can develope your own applications using C programming.
comes with a nice c lib to.

3000 with mic software. he is also a developer in this area. his name is

Check out (1) Matrox Iluminator. 1500 – 3000 depending on the model. and
(2). Videomail board. around $1000. Both will do video in a window on
you're pc. I think there's a couple of boards advertised in Computer
Shopper that report to do that for about $700.
