>> … but now the task has been moved to the PC just another one bites the dust, and as in most cases, I suspect because there is still no real quality office software for the Amiga. Or may I be wrong ?

You try managing a mailing list on our favorite machine. You can do it, bar ly, but not if you want to take advantage of pre-sort Zip+4 PostNet coded ra es. Same goes for accounting. I've been strugling to use my Amiga for everythi g in my business, and so far only the checkbook and labeling software is on he PC. I don't have a PC in my office (another down the hall) or a lot mor stuff would probably have migrated when I got fed up with the lack of busin ss software on the Amiga. I'd write the business software for the Amiga, but I know what the market is for business software on the Amiga — good enough for pretty simple software, but not for a large development effort.

Want to make a zillion dollars? Clone Microfiche Filer for Windows.

Why would that make a zillion dollars? Because MF was so cool? I never actually used it, though I remember thinking that it was kindof a cool idea.

It gives good demo, and it's a very easy to use database program. Can you think of anything as easy to use, or as flexible, on the PC?

Like I said, I haven't used MF. I also haven't used that many PC databases. I usually force something else (like a spreadsheet or accounting or wp app) to do those duties, since I don't keep any particularly large databases.

> think of anything as easy to use, or as flexible, on the PC {uF-Filer} Access or the card filer in Organize Your Way I would have thought would have come the closest. The one I miss the most is Pro DataRetrieve on the Amiga. Not Quite Compatible (NQC) from ADOS 2 on. I haven't come across any other vector driven databases on any platform. regards, Lu on AutoPilot downunder

> Why would that make a zillion dollars? Because MF was so cool? No, I don't think it would make a zillion dollars as a Win app. For a flat filer it is good but slow even on my 50hz '030 machine, especially slow to save and exit screens….imagine how that would play on a windows machine. The average PC user is left brained anyway and would hate hunting through the menus and moving the screens around, I think. MFF is very clumsy to export/import to a spreadsheet too, although it does have Arexx. It could use work to get it up to even 1995 Amiga standards, but it does still play on Dos 3.1 !! And yes, it is easier to use than any PC database for light users. Power users will feel it is a joke. alternate: jonest@hfsi.com I never met a man I didn't like…Will Rogers

Yes, I think it would appeal to light database users. For that category, I think it would be killer. And, yes, I agree that MFF's menus were lame. Don't clone, improve. 🙂

John > Don't clone, improve. funny to hear that from someone proposing to go Amiga->clone for a change. Tom alternate: jonest@hfsi.com I never met a man I didn't like…Will Rogers

Actually, we were using Microfiche Filer, a database with no particular office qualities. It was discontinued many years ago as far as I know. I switched to DeskTop Set, a personal information manager for Windows.

> we were using Microfiche Filer, I still use it here in the version 2.2 to keep customer records and print invoices and labels. I bought it from the author only two years ago with some arexx scripts for business usage. OK for a home business or small service shop I think. Do you still have the address of the author of MicroFiche Filer Plus? I want to see if there is a more current version than the one I'm using (version 2.2+) – would like to have MFF+ open a PublicScreen so I can put some ARexx called GUI stuff on its screen! I really like the program and it amazes me that a 1988 vintage program still runs so well under OS3.1!

Keep us informed as to your findings. I really like MFF too and would love to see an update that brings it up to a 3.1 os level such as font preferences, etc.

Ed I have the same version 2.2+ and the last number I had was (619) 538-6263 Software Visions 12625 La Tortola San Diego, CA 92129 I think it is not so bad for light duty if you don't need a relational database. My wife used it to keep customer accounts for a small apparel shop for a couple of years and found it very easy to learn. Tom alternate: jonest@hfsi.com I never met a man I didn't like…Will Rogers

Tom, I agree it's not for relationship database use, but then I don't think it was ever advertised that way <grin>! MFF+ is the most impressive flat file database I've ever used. With the ARexx port some rather interesting things can be accomplished. Thanks for the address and phone number – hope it leads to a good end.

Do be sure to let us know if you find a newer version of MFF+. I for one still depend on it for some things. Tom alternate: jonest@hfsi.com I never met a man I didn't like…Will Rogers
