A500 Problems

HELP! I'm having a strange problem with my A500. Whenever I eject a disk
(99% of the time) Workbench locks up. This also happens when DF1: is
disconnected. I've replaced the CIA's, but that only helped for a few days.
I've been to a service center, but they couldn't get the problem to happen
for them. I also am having a problem with my clock not staying correct. I
have an ICD AdRAM520 with 4 megs, and have used SetClock from 1.3.2 to try
to fix this. It's been suggested that I also replace Agnus and Paula, but I
don't want to do this until I get a second opinion. Any ideas? Thanks! Tony

Humm…the shop can't get it to happen…but you can get it to
happen.
Thus…something must be different between when you try it, and
they try it. Since your Agnus and Paula chips didn't change between your
home and the shop…they're obviously not at fault.
I suggest you take your complete setup to the shop and demonstrate
the problem to them.

Don, I did take the whole system in (less monitor), and it did finally
happen there. The thing is, since they couldn't get it to happen EVERY time
they tried it, they wouldn't even open it up! A friend of mine suggested
also to change the keyboard (?) too, but that didn't do anything. Thanx

Your dealer (or his/her tech that is) is nuts. I presume they'll
have you change parts until you end up with a new computer piece by piece.
I'd suggest a new dealer, and/or a complaint to Commodore.

I'll have to look for another dealer AND make a complaint. I just
tried to take the system back to the way I bought it (no AdRAM); when I
powered up, the A501 smoked! I popped the shielding off, and found that C61
(a bypass cap near the middle of the board) was the crispy critter! I don't
get that at all. Oh, well. I've spent too much time on this already.

If you take everything in, also be sure to take in the power supply. A
flakey power supply can do some strange things, and the power supplly that
came with the 500 (especally the older ones) was not, shall we say, the
greatest. Take in your complete setup, by all means. I had problems
recently with a bad Gary chip. Gave some really strange GURU's.

Bill, I did take the power supply. The only thing I didn't was the monitor.
A local shop has a 500 I could buy for parts for $100 or so; I think I
might just get it and try swapping 'til it works! Boy, that $400 price drop
on a 2000 is looking good about now! Tony
