IP Painting

R.Satoh,
Haven't forgotten your E-Mail, just needed time to compose a reply.
Here goes. Yes my Iguana is all hand drawn. Came together very quickly
compared to my other art projects. I digitize lots of things with the
Digiview and sometimes create textures in other paint programs. It is
faster to do it that way. Never throw away anything!
With IP, I've been reducing a full page to smaller brushes. Most
of the time the integrety of the reduction is retained. That's what having
more color available does for you. I save these brushes to a separate page
so I can get them without spending the time to load them all in.
I have a 500, no acceleration. It is slow. I have not been able to
get a definitive answer as to whether accelerating my machine will help
enough to justify the cost of it. Some IP functions take forever so I do
the laundry or burn dinner. Don't think this is a problem with IP so much
as it is the computation time factor. I have the same problem with Imagine.
To make the Ham-E real time it might need to have its own dedicated memory.
I'm no hardware person so I don't really know. Yes, I wish that the drawing
and painting modes were faster. Then the little screen announcements
telling you what phase of the process you're in would be redundant. 'Till
then I appreciate knowing what IP is doing.
Now printing. What a bummer! I have artistic friends that get
slides made and then photographic prints. So far, I've seen Cibachrome,
Fugichrome and other print types of photographic paper. You see the scan
lines with some images. I've seen dye sublimation prints and prints from
video printers. Right now I'd wait. There are some Macintosh programs that
had poster size prints that are not pixelized. I saw some very nice
lithographs done from the computer to film to lithography process. I would
guess the film recorder would have to have plenty of memory. So its
possible but costs $$$$$. When I know more I'll let you know.

Margaret,
An accellerated Amiga would help a LOT. An A3000/25 would just zip
along when running IP. You would still have to wait a little for some
operations but it would be seconds instead of minutes. Something on the
order of 10-15 times faster would be a realistic estimate. I admire your
patience but you would certainly get a chance to accomplish more and
explore more possibilities when you didn't have time to walk around the
block while it rendered. BTW the Iguana is impressive and done in an
interesting way. I used a Firecracker24 board to view it. I hope you will
keep at it. I wish I had more talent to go with fancy machine and software
I have.

Well if the sky is the limit in terms of what you can spend $$$. I saw the
'40 boards at AmiExpo …yes they are fast. However I just don't hve the
budget and the Ham-E and IP at least let me get there. As far as the
ray-tracing goes, I have friends with fancy Amigas and I can farm my files
out. As for real time painting that allows me to see what I'm doing, I'll
stick with IP. Like most Amiga owners I use my machine to do many things,
file conversions, transfers, art, textile design so changing machines is
not easy to do. I'm using IP to work with digitized textile samples and my
still video camera, it just gets used all the time.
Margaret,
It sounds like you are getting the most out of YOUR Amiga. I think you
have chosen the best hardware for the money with the A500, Ham-E and (I
assume) Digi-View.

Well If I had the money, I'd do it differently. One of my problems is that
I have a lot of peripherals and I was moving off of my 1000. I wanted to
keep everything I had. I looked at powerup but for a A3000 with a decent
processor speed and all of the memory I needed the price was too much. So I
getting there little by little. Maybe have the '40 boards out there will
get the price down on the '30 leavings. Don't know. It is wall wart city
here.
Mrgaret,
It DOES take a long time to accumulate the hardware you want. I always
seem to get further away from affording what I REALLY want. Case in point:
Porsche Carrera.
