Watch for my article in Computer Shopper which details how to add RCA outputs and an "Audio Only Mode" switch to the Toshiba 3301 mechanism. How many people, out of curiousity, would feel up to such a modification (drilling a couple holes and *minimal* soldering of a couple jumper wires). — Later … … Craig [Zmac Sound Maven] There is 1 Reply.

Craig, My Toshiba 3301 says that it can play CD's without a host, and already has the RCA connections on the back. Cheers, Mike Ford

<<My Toshiba 3301 already has the RCA connections on the back.>> Yes, Mike, Toshiba just added RCAs to the back in the past month or so. Earler drives lack them. <<says that it can play CD's without a host >> Yeh? Care to explain how? <grin> — COD There is 1 Reply.

Craig, re Yeh? Care to explain how? <grin> — COD Easy, No switch is required on the 3301. With the host computer disconnected from the SCSI port just put in a audio CD and it plays. Briefly touch the eject to make it skip from track to track, hold it down and the disc ejects. Don't you just love long article lead times?<g> Cheers, Mike Ford

The Toshiba 3301B case has RCA outs in back. I do not beleive earlier models of the 3301 do however. I do not not think the typical Computer Shopper reader would mind pulling out their Black and Decker, but feel that most out of laziness will opt for the easier yet less elegant more cumbersome earplug to 2 RCA adapter. Also the earplug socket is more prone than many to slacken up where it is more difficult good stereo contact. I wouldnt recommend walking across the room with your phones on as I have a couple of times:). (BTW, do you remember a message from someone saying that they wish the Toshibas earplug preamp was louder? That wasn't me, but I tend to agree with him. I keep my thumb wheel maxed out just to keep a decent volume level.)

Jones: <<The Toshiba 3301B case has RCA outs in back. >> Well, Jones, the early 3301Bs did not have RCA outs … trust me, I held one in my hot lil hands! People are saying the new Tosh 3301B comes-with — APS sells this exact case and drive and they are now shipping with RCAs. You still need a little switch and shorting jumper to enable the audio-only mode should you care to enable this function. — COD There is 1 Reply.

Craig, Yes, sorry, I have a newer 3301B from APS, mit RCA. I am listeningto audio CDs although the output is slightly wimpy from the earphone jacks or the RCA jacks. I am controlling the Audio CD's from with The CD Teaser DA which I beleive was on the Nautilus Disk. What exactly do you mean by Audio Only mode or playing CD's without a host? jones
