I have an A2286 AT Bridgeboard. I'm running MS-DOS 5.0. The following are
load times (that is the time it takes for the program to become ready) i.e.
until accessing of the harddrive stops.
Xtree 2.0 – 110 seconds
Markex 4.1 – 15 "
Paradox 3.5 – 105 "
MS-DOS Edit 10 "
It's Legal 2.0c- 195 "
dBASE III+ 1.1 25 "
Quattro Pro 1.1 105 "
Is there any way to speed up this process?

Are you using a "local" hard drive, or a drive shared with the
Amiga side?
If using a shared Amiga drive…then a lot of the slowdown is due
to the interface.

It's a shared Amiga drive. I have two 80 meg drives, can I have one on the
Amiga and the other on the IBM side? How?

Yes, you can have one on each side, but you'll need a controller on the PC
side.
There's a hardware fix (bending a pin out and soldering a wire) that helpsri 37220
ri 37327
correct the slowdown problem on the 286 BB. I printed it in
CROSSINGS–leave me your postal address and I'll try to get it to you if
you want it.

Marion, thanks. I've had that fix done last spring. Seems to work fine.
Have you heard of "cachecard", a program from Dave Haynie, that disables
the 68030 from caching the bridgeboard's dual-port memory?
Just for your info, in my A2000 with 286 bridge, there are 4 AT slots and 2
extra XT slots. I've had 6 boards on the DOS side, running fine for the
past couple years.

BB some decent expansion room!

Gayle, I un-soldered the rightmost female slot (where the bboard normally
sits) from the Amiga motherboard. Got 2 new XT slots wired together with
leads going under this bboard slot to the 62 pins. Re-installed this group
of 3 XT slots back onto the Amiga motherboard. There is about 1/8 inch gap
under this bboard slot where wires could fit easily. The 2 extra XT slots
are anchored to the backwall with 3/8 inch metal standoffs, so in essence,
they are floating above the Amiga motherboard (between the bboard and the
power supply).
This was done a couple of weeks ago. This better method replaced the setup
whereby I had ground down the top plastic of the bboard slot, exposing the
62 tips. The 2 XT's were wired to the tops of the exposed tips. This worked
for a couple of years, until recently, when I had put the bboard back in,
and 2 tips got caught and were pushed down to the bottom of the slot! After
pulling them back straight, I found my TrueVision Vista board to start
displaying weird video activity. At this point I knew there was going to be
more connection problems.
I then decided I would try to remove the bboard slot right off from the
Amiga motherboard, and make any connections to the pins under the plastic.
This way the tips aren't mucked with. This method was a lot easier than the
first. Grinding off the plastic from the top of the slot to expose the
tips, with a Dremel tool was not a piece of cake.
With this newer method, the hardest part is first removing the rightmost XT
slot off the Amiga motherboard. Un-soldering the 62 pins was easy once I
decided to use compressed air to blow the molten solder thru the
motherboard (which then piled up onto the back of the XT slot). Once all
the pins were loose, one pulls the slot off the motherboard. Just use a
xacto knife to scrap off the caked solder. With patience and soldering
skill and 12 hours, anyone could do it 🙂
