Autodesk Announces New Computer-Based Tutorial for AutoCAD
Bothell, Wash. — October 16, 1991 — Autodesk Retail Products announced
today the upcoming release of AutoCAD(R) Simulator(TM), a computer-based
tutorial for AutoCAD Release 11. The company plans to release AutoCAD
Simulator by October 31, 1991 and will be demonstrating the product at the
Educom Show, October 16-18, in San Diego at Autodesk booth #114.
Targeted primarily for new and prospective AutoCAD customers and for
educational markets, the PC based tutorial is the first of its kind to be
sold and supported directly by Autodesk.
"The power of AutoCAD is virtually unlimited, but for a new customer, that
power can be a little overwhelming," said Malcolm Davies, Autodesk's
executive vice president. "With the AutoCAD Simulator, designers can
supplement their formal AutoCAD training and greatly accelerate their
learning cycle with this interactive, highly innovative product. After just
six to eight hours with AutoCAD Simulator, new customers can begin to
create their own AutoCAD drawings."
An Ideal Learning Tool
While AutoCAD Simulator offers benefits for new and prospective AutoCAD
designers, its utility does not stop there. The program also serves as an
excellent introduction to the general world of computer-aided drafting.
"This kind of computer-assisted instruction is more valuable because the
student actually gets the 'feel' for the CAD software. AutoCAD Simulator
actually simulates working on CAD exercises without the need to reference
hard-copy manuals," says Linda Lancaster, a CAD/CAM instructor for the
Francis Tuttle Vo-Tech Center in Oklahoma City. "I plan to use AutoCAD
Simulator with every one of my CAD students, from new students to those who
are here for upgrade training," she says.

Educators will appreciate the fact that AutoCAD Simulator allows multiple
passwords so more than one student can work on the system at different
times. The program also saves individual user data so students can pick up
where they left off in a future session. Besides exercises to test student
knowledge, AutoCAD Simulator comes with multiple choice questions, an
editable key term glossary and an online summary of lesson objectives. The
program also allows instructors to track and report on each student's
progress through the tutorial.
Beyond the Classroom
With its extensive use of icons and a straightforward style, AutoCAD
Simulator is visually appealing and easy to use. Self-paced lessons make it
ideal for use in a variety of settings including the classroom, home or
office.
The program is organized into four main sections: an AutoCAD introduction,
2D Drafting, 3D Drafting, and AutoCAD's Advanced Modeling Extension(TM)
(AME). Features discussed in the 2D and 3D Drafting sections range from
dimensioning, set-up and the coordinate system to generation of 3D
polygons. Final lessons on the Advanced Modeling Extension include commands
for creating and extruding 3D solid objects and an overview of Boolean
Geometry operations.

AutoCAD Simulator is a stand-alone program that runs on any standard IBM
PC, XT, AT, PS/1, PS/2 or 100% compatible. It's also one of the few AutoCAD
tutorials that does not require the added purchase of AutoCAD. The
suggested retail price of AutoCAD Simulator in the U.S. is $395. An
Educational price of $195 is also available to students, institutions, and
faculty members by contacting an Autodesk Educational Reseller. AutoCAD
