A collegue has ordered a "Fast" non-linear editing system. He would like to
know if this system creates "on-line" quality that can be down-loaded onto
Beta. He also asks what ancillary equipment is needed to up load and down load
for on-line, i.e. how many gigabites, or any other hardware that is required.
Also, how does this system compare to the D-Vision pro 2.2, the Video Cube, and
the Media 100. Also, does anyone know anything about Sony's new Hybrid
non-linear system. Lastly, when is the Avid for PC to come on the market, and
at what price?

I am still working on setting up my DP/R and so I have not been able to
run it through its paces yet and cannot comment on the quality.
Theoretically however, with fast enough harddrives, the DP/R should
approach a lossless quality, ie. what you put in is what you get out.
One big advantage of the Video Machine over most other "lower-end" systems
like the Media100 is the huge advantage of real-time transitioning. The
DP/R can feed the Video Machine two streams of video in real time unlike
the Media 100 which is just one stream of video, forcing you to render
effects like dissolves.
The FAST Video Machine with DP/R is very suitable to a hybrid editing
environment controlling anything from Control-C interface to RS-422.
