If you're interested in genealogy like myself, Bob, here's a few other
tidbits I've been following.
From what I've read/heard, there are already CD-ROM readers in a few of the
larger LDS family history centers around the country. My local FHC here in
Phoenix/Mesa hasn't received anything yet so I can't comment the disks. The
main collection of CD-ROM disks is kept in Salt Lake City with the
microfilm. This CD-ROM effort seems to be well underway.
There's another company offering CD-ROM buy/rent statistics. It's
Automated Archives in Orem, Utah 801-226-6066. They've copied to CD-ROM
lot's of death statistics from the SSA and some marriage data for approx.
20 states. They, also, seem to be very active creating more disks.

I tried calling the LDS microfilm manager over the weekend, but he's
ferrying some kids somewhere for their mission, and won't be back for a
while.
What are they doing on the CD-ROM project: scanning the original pages, and
storing images, or doing full keystroke/OCR on the records?

Bob, re the LDS activity with CD-ROM – all I can find out is that the IGI
and the Ancestral File are available on CD ROM at the FHCs now. My local
center here in Mesa, AZ *does not* have any CD-ROM equipment, and it
supports Phoenix and all the surrounding towns. Myabe you could nudge your
friend? <G> The Church is evaluating a program to make the search software
and the disks accessable via public libraries and society libraries with a
high probability of also making the CDs available for sale to private
individuals. This won't happen until sometime in 92 if that soon.
