#WorkBench 2.04
59 messages in this thread
I read one of your messages about 2.04 version coming out soon. I believe
it coming out here in Australia at the end of October. That what Commodore
says. They are not giving a precise date. But just getting orders in. Would
the Commodore fudge factor come into this and we wait a couple more months.
Interesting.
G'Day from John
John calling from Darwin Australia "The Top End" – via Whap!
John,
They have been saying for a long time that it would be out in October – and
October is nearly gone. They have been accepting orders from our dealers
for a few weeks now, and last week my dealer said her shipment was supposed
to arrive on Oct. 25. I was not there to see if it actually came, but when
she has a date given, she usually gets it. To be very truthful, I did not
ask about the Enhancer kits. I was talking to the technician mostly, and
he said their supply of chips for updating to 2.04 were due Oct. 25. They
thought the kits would probably arrive at the same time.
From there on, your guess is as good as mine. 🙂
Betty
They have'em in stock at a Colorado Springs dealer as of Friday the 25th.
Cheers, Paul (WA1OMM)
2.04 is here …. wait you can't have that one it's MINE…
Well I would have loved to announce the arrival of 2.04 Kit for the
500/2000 here at Leigh's BUT it came and WENT in one day!!! (I got mine
though!).

Ben,
Now that 2.04 is in a nice offical ROM can you tell us what does NOT
work with this upgrade? We've all been waiting for 2.0 to stablize before
posting any compatibility problems.
I'll yell when I find something, so far everything…. OOPS I almost fogot
(that was forgot, sorry, new word generator working OT) ADSpeed, system
goes nuts if it is enabled by default, works fine though once you get to
WB. Anything else I'll let you know.
BEN:Leigh's Computer's
Thanks, Ben. I don't have many games but I'm curious as to which ones
die under 2.04. There is nothing worse than finding out one of your
programs, unexpectedly, doesn't work because of an upgrade. Have you tried
TxEd? Does 2.04 work slower on a stock A2000 with a 68000 chip than it
does on an A3000 with a 68030? Thanks again.
No I don't have TxEd, and as for question #2 Of course my machine is slower
than a 3000.
BEN:Leigh's Computer's
I guess what I'd trying to ask (in my own jumbled way) is if 2.04 on a
68000 Amiga is slower than 1.3 on the same Amiga. Thanks.
Leslie..
I tried 2.0 WAY back when, on a stock A2000. Some of the things I
noticed immediately were that the pull down menus 'pulled down' much more
quickly. Screens and windows seemed to refresh more quickly as well. This
is attributed (apparently) to a complete rewrite of the layers.library, or
at least some cleaning up of it. If this is the case, then there should be
a more notable 'snap' to your applications under 2.04, as opposed to 1.3.
Jim

That's kind of what I thought (referring to the snap in the menus.)
Perhaps the 512K Kickstart has something to do with it. How does one go
about installing 2.04 on a hard drive that currently has lots of 1.3 files?
The "c" directory must be a nightmare.
No, not at all as a matter of fact it seems a little faster.

Ben:
I recall that WP 4.01 was originally one of the programs that didn't run
very well with WB 2.04. Did they do any type of "fix" to run it with the
new OS? I can't get it to print. The requester says "can't find
printer.dev."

WP has an update available (for some time now too), call them.

I will. Thanks.

Leslie;
TxEd is pretty shaky under 2.x which is why an 'upgrade' path was provided
to TurboText.
-bill/ARS KB7LX
Bill, I haven't seen any txed problems yet; has anyone else?
Ron
Ron;
Not sure what the situation is with TxEd. I know that it would not run
under WB2.03 very well but I have had TurboText since then and have not
tried TxEd on the release version of WB.
-bill/ARS KB7LX
Bill,
TxEd works just fine under 2.04. The row/column indicator looks a
little odd if you're using a titlebar font larger than 8 points, but
nothing's broken. I don't remember having any problms under 2.03 either;
what sort of things were you running into?
How do you like TurboText? I've been thinking about getting it,
especially after discovering that Martin Taillefer is the author. I was
very impressed with his work on M2Sprint.
-Dave-
Hmm… I have heard how great TurboText is but I really don't want to
spring for a new text editor just yet. (My money is running short.)
Perhaps I'll use a PD text editor until I can scrape up the bucks. Any
suggestions?
Leslie;
Many things that were broke under WB2.03 work ok with WB2.04 so your
present Text Editor may work ok. I am even using WP's PE again though I
don't recommend it for 2.04 operation. Its just that there are some things
the PE does better than any other editor for me.
Some of the various incarnations of Emacs are reasonably powerful and
useful. There are people that use them even now. Be aware that different
versions of Emacs are sometimes as different as night and day. Thus, if
you get one that you "really can't stand," don't assume that they all
operate the same way.
-bill/ARS KB7LX
Now that I think of it, didn't someone say that "ed" had gone through a
major change?
Leslie,
I like EMACS. There are several versions each with different functions. I
use a version for IBM-PC at work; makes it easy not having to remember two
sets of commands.
Garry
I got Mine!
..Bill 😉
Congrats!

Ben,
Exactly what is included in the kit? KS ROMS and Ados + Extras? Is new
denise included or is that sold seperatley? does 2.04 work with old Denise?
Is it still true that you will not get the higher resolutions and
de-interlaced resolutions w/o Flicker Fixer/FlickerFree Video/CBM De
interlacer card? wmc
Rom, Manual, Four Disks (WB,Extras,Fonts. , install). New Denise is
seperate and not avail(well C= parts doesn't have a part # yet *sigh*).
De-interlace modes are possible with the new Denise, but only
640×480,160×480.
BEN:Leigh's Computer's
Ben, Thanks for the reply. 160×480?? Is that for real?? what on earth
would I use that resolution for?
wmc
Your guess is as good as mine on that one!
BEN:Leigh's Computer's
Wayne –
I believe he meant 1260×480 – the new SuperHighRes mode.
Harry
Ben, I've been able to get the enhancer kit, but not the needed ROM for my
A2620 board (68020). My dealer doesn't know when he can get more. I asked 4
months ago, but he says just no can do 🙁
Paul
–pt–not seattle– 😉
Paul,
I too have had trouble getting the new ROMs for the A2620. My dealer
has been told Nov/Dec availability. Maybe they will included the needed
tweak for UNIX bootability. Now THAT is a wild a$# guess.
….Mark 74335,1677
They (C=) don't have it yet!!!! I'm still waiting for mine, for my
customers!
BEN:Leigh's Computer's
Ben,
Commodore has the ROM's….CBM doesn't have them yet on their parts
list.
Don
YES THEY DO! On our 2.04 announcement we got the part numbers for these
ROMs and they are listed in the C= Parts computer as "back ordered".
Typical C= a warehouse full of them and nobody knows they are there!
BEN:Leigh's Computer's
Ben,
My dealer called last week…he had the part numbers (from the
announcement) and the folks at CBM said they didn't have those numbers on
their parts list YET.
If they are now on the parts list, then they've been added in the
last week.
Don
Gee, it's the little details that get ya 🙂
Thanks for the info.
Is there anyway to work around the problem? Do I really have to keep the
board physically out of the machine?
Paul
–pt–not seattle– 😉
No, you can leave the 68020 or 68030 board in the machine; you just have to
remember to ctrl-A-A on startup, and choose the 68000 cpu. My experience
is that if you don't, you end up in the ?68020 monitor; while interesting,
this does not allow easy access to your normal applications…. Rick
– via Whap! – Rick Stiphout 🙂
Betty, I've been told (believe it or not) that the rom kits are being
shipped already.
Ron
Ron, My local dealer has taken a deposit from me for 2.04 Rom kit. He says
all dealers will get an initial 25 kits and that he suggests I get on the
list quick. So I did. Now I'm wondering what it would cost elsewhere if I
waited a bit longer. (I've waited about as long as I can though)
The kit is $99.00 and the deposit was $25. We'll see now. This is a new
dealer (to me) and I'm going to give him a chance.
Chris
You'll also have to pay him to install the rom. On most boxes the rom is
very easy to put it, but CBM insists. The real concern is when the
software is installed; the script moves things like your mountlist to other
places. Be very careful.
Ron
Ron,
How about detailing your experience installing the ROM and software?
I never trusted scripts to install things, unless I first examined them
with an editor. Is it really necessary to use the script? What about the
jumper on it? I have a B2000 model Amiga. I'm sure there are installation
instructions, but could you explain the procedures you went through to get
things working?
Thanks,
Chris
The dealer (not the customer) has an instruction sheet for the rom; most
machines you just cut the jumper wire that runs across the back of the
chip. But they do warn you that you'll lose the warranty on the chip
installing it yourself.
Ben put the chip in with me leaning over him. We then booted with the
installation disk and it came up nicely, fully reckognizing my Kronos based
hard card. We proceeded with the script which worked well but which IMHO
does not offer much warning about the moving of files like MOUNTLIST. Once
its done DO NOT REBOOT, but do a full exam of the disk to restore things
that you need (in some cases from the OLD directory).
Edit USER-STARTUP to put into it the things you need from your old
startup-sequence. Don't put them into the new startup-sequence. Remove
commands like STACK, or which refer to 'C:xxxx' or such where the command
in question is now in rom; the command will fail.
Ron
Ron –
In my 2.0 Upgrade kit there was a booklet titled, "Amiga Release 2
Getting Started" Was this booklet missing from your kit, or had you simply
suffered momentary aphasia and forgotten how to READ? The booklet
described adequately and reassuringly the behavior of copying certain files
into the OLD directory.
– Nelson …
– via Whap!
It tells you that the files are copied. It doesn't say that your mountlist
entries are deleted from devs:. Nor does it warn you anywhere of the
consequences of that action.
I'm just suggesting strongly that even the most experienced installers and
techs, let alone others, need to exercise extra care, and that if I were at
CBM I'd want people to know that.
Outside of these concerns and compatibility concerns, I think that
Commodore has done an excellent job on 2.04.
Ron
$99 seems about standard.

Betty:
They *ARRIVED* at my local dealer last thursday…price for the
enhancer/rom chip is $105, installed.
Jonathan
Jonathan – from Albany, NY, via whap!
Yeah!!! Their here! OK developers, no more excuses for holding back on the
2.0 versions of your software 8^) (Ben, Bill, John, etc. you know who you
are).
John – K7KB (via Whap!)
We hear you. We're 2.0'ing right now.
Ben
Jonathan,
My dealer has them now, as well. Their price is $99 plus $35 installation
fee.
Betty
Betty,
Who has the enhancer kits? Metropolitan? Do you know if they will sell it
without the installation?
(I'ld call them, but I'm (cheap-cheap) trying to avoid a long distance
call!)
Thanx, Chris
Reading further message by you all over there I see that you got it. I
guess it upto Commodore Australia to bring it out shortly. I already have
my order in and I am paying A$95.00 which is less than I thought. see ya.
John calling from Darwin Australia "The Top End" – via Whap!
John,
Do you suppose the difference in time is because of the time required to
ship them to Australia? I do hope you will have yours soon.
Betty
Betty,
I guess we in Down Under Land are always on last list. I know from my
dealer that theyt had the Rom's in England a couple of weeks ago. I have to
be patient I guess.
It a big country out here.
John calling from Darwin Australia "The Top End" – via Whap!
It's a country I've always wished I could see – but SO far away!
Hope your ROMs get there very quickly.

A$95.00, eh? Pardon me fer asking, but how do Aussie $ compare to US$
?

Upgrade is cheaper in Aus. A$95.00 ~= US$74.10. — Art
