Noise Software ???

Hi All: I wasn't quite sure where to leave a message about "sound and noise", so this seemed like a good place to start. This message has NOTHING to do with music. I've been trying to find some good sound software that would allow the display of sound data as a spectrogram and hopefully allow sound spectrum editing. My goal would be to take the digitized sound data file and break it up into octave band pressure levels. I would like to be able to determine the Leq for these octave bands if possible. Does anyone know of such software for the Amiga. I have been using Spectrogram 6.3 by Richard Horne. It certainly seems like an excellent beginning to the program that I am looking for, but it does not allow the spectral characteristics to be edited with the result saved to a sound file. Any ideas for me to pursue ??? – via Whap!

Bill: it sounds like you want to upload a copy of RGS, right here in AMiga arts. It's my realtime spectrogram synthesis program, which can analyze digital sound and let you edit it, or even better, let you draw directly in the frequency domain, using special drawing tools, and hear the results instantly! also can drive midi data streams . Too bad I haven't rewritten it for years, and I don't know how old the one here is, but it should be more recent thatn the one that shipped with "M" in '88. And it's free – just send a fun Colortone postcard if you want to be on my list of RGS users, which I have note of from Europe, Australia and South America. Danger – You'd better print out the docs!

I just took a peek at it and it looks pretty creaky, besides being a ZOO format file! also, you should know that RGS only handles 128 oscillators, so doesn't resynthesize with great fidelity, and doesn't provide you with dB numbers and such info that you might want from its analysys. But try it anyway!

Can you tell us difinitively what is the most recent version of RGS. I see it (and have a version or two) on many a BBS with many different dates. Is there some clear way to identify the version number before or after downloading. Now two all important questions. With the impending protection of 16 bit Amiga samplers (Sunrize, BetaUnlimited-suposedly awaiting FCC approval, possibly others maybe from GVP) is there any hope of a utility to make or save sounds as 16 bit? Is there any possibility you'd include a way to detune individual harmonics?

Craig: I uploaded the latest one I have just a few days ago.. take it away! I'd love to support 16 bit format devices and samples, but I don't have the hardware or the docs. I was talking to the beta board people – perhaps I bother them again. This is probably the last RGS in this form. The source got dinged in a disk crash last year. I'm vaguely starting a new program in assembler called Bees which is more of the same, but with a complete interface for a change and better synthesis capabilities, like long samples, much more intense bandwidth (selectable..), better MIDI support… the usuals. Also, Vapor Paint may get its long awaited SOund output renderer to provide vector based additive/granular synthesis. So look for RGS in new uploads or Music utilities… jhhl
