#Amiga Modem Only???
11 messages in this thread
Hi,i'm about to buy an Amiga 500 and the someone told me that i can ONLY use
certain modems with it.Can anyone tell me if this is true? I CAN'T ask the
dealer as he now has NO Amy modems and so would suspect his answer. Can i use my
present 1200 rs232 modem without any problems? Thanks for any and all
info….Wp 3.0
Willie,
As long as the modem uses serial RS232 you should have no problems at
all. If it's Hayes compatable (command set) so much the better, as almost
all Term programs support it.
Hope this helps,
Doug
YES,IT HAS.THANKS….WP 3.0
Willie,
I moved my Hayes 1200 Smartmodem from my Compaq Deskpro to my Amiga 500, and it
works fine. Didn't change the cable, or a single switch.

Ahhhh,thanks for the info,Lee….Wp 3.0
Willie,
I wish I know how these rumors get started, yes, you can use ANY modem
that can be hooked up to a standard RS232 serial port.
Don
Don,neither do i but i really appreciate all the info from Amiga forum! Thanks
a lot.BTW,since i know you need the room, please feel free to erase my msg.
right away. Because of your response, their will be at least four users that
won't leave the same question. They'll be happy to hear this news!! Thanks
again.Hmmmm, why does'nt someone start a POSITIVE rumour one of these days? It
would sure be nice for a change.

Willie, Don hasn't read your msg yet – but I thought I'd put my 2 cents in
<grin>. We don't erase msgs, unless they are very old, haven been received by
whoever they were addressed to and do not contain any information. These are
msgs that for eg. say simply "Thanks" or "hehe", etc.. We try to get rid of
those because they take up valuable msg space and the scroll rate here is very
fast.
Remember that every question and answer is valuable and most times to more than
just the original person who asked the question.
Enjoy the forum, let us know if there's anything we can help with.

Willie, I noticed in my msg to you that there was a misleading typo – in the
line that reads "…are very old, haven been read…" 'haven' was supposed to
be HAVE.
Marlene
Willie:
I see that you already have several replies. In terms of
compatability, the Ami is about as compatable with the various modems as a
computer can get. I have even seen hayes modems that were so different from
each other that programs written to use the one could not be configured to run
with the other one. Notice, that is programs! The Ami will support the full
RS-232C modem control set (except secondary channel I think).
The only thing that one has to be careful about is that the connector
has some power available, thus it is best that the lines carrying power not be
connected to the modem unless it was designed to use that power. The lines
used for that power ARE LEGAL per the standard. Most modems do not use those
pins at all and most cables do not either. 73, bill
Bill, thanks to you and all the members that took the time to give me this much
needed info! I will certainly remember the powered line connector stuff and
will check it out BEFORE i hook up.NO,i'm not gonna start a rumour with that
part!!! *smile* Thanks Bill and All……Wp 3.0
