#PC286 Emulator on Amiga?

My wife and I are in the market for a PC emulator for our A500 system. Is
there anyone around who has used GVP's 286 PC emulator? Would you recommend
it? Our system is set up as follows:
A500 GVP A500HD+ (52 Megs) 3 Megs Ram ADSPEED
Is an emulator of this type a viable alternative to going out and getting a
clone?

I have the same system you do minus the Adspeed. I've had the PC286 for
about a month. It works pretty well, and has handled most programs I've
tried. It doesn't handle PD games very well. I would recommend it for
runnning programs that don't use alot of graphics. Setting up the board
and a hard drive partition are pretty easy. According to the Norton
Uilities the board runs about 15 time the speed of an XT, this is without
the math coprocessor.
So far I'm very satisfied with the unit and with GVP's support.

Thanks for responding! I have a few more questions though before I go out
and get it. First off, are you running it with Workbench 1.3 or 2.04? Does
it interfere in any way with Amiga DOS routines? Have you run Windows or
DOS with it? Will it run an Epson/IBM compatible printer? What exactly
comes with the package — software? Thanks in advance for any info you can
share!

I am using Workbench 2.04. It doesn't seem to interfere with Amiga Dos,
but it does use alot of graphics ram, I only 512K, so some Amiga programs
can't open a screen to run on. I'm using MS Dos 5.0, I haven't tried
Windows, but from what I've seen of Windows I think it would be pretty
slow. It shouldn't have any problem with an Epson/IBM compatible printer.
I have a Star SG-10 and use it in IBM mode, works very well.
The software includes a confiquration program, allows you to set boot
drive, from floppy or HD. You can use 2 Amgia floppies as IBM drives.
You can set the amount of memory to use, and video display mode to come up
in. You also get some utilities for change video modes and installing
expanded ram. You have to supply DOS and a bootable disk to start the
system with, after that you can copy to your HD and boot from it.

Thanks for the info. I picked it up and had no problems with the
installation. I'll probably prepare a HD partition for it this weekend, as
well as load DOS 5.0 onto it. I too have 512K Chip Ram. Could you be
running out because you are running MSDOS and Amiga programs at the same
time? How many Amiga applications are you running? Have you tried any
commercial programs/games with it yet?

I have the system set to stop Amiga boot, and have only 70K graphics ram.
I haven't tried any commercial programs yet other than the Norton
Utilities, if you use this don't use the disk optimizer program, I did and
it screwed up the partition. PD and shareware programs I have tried all
worked fine except for some games. The games that did work ran slowly.

I made the copies of the DOS 5.0 disks but renamed them Dos1, Dos 2, etc
When I try to load the the first disk I get "Insert MS Dos Disk 1". I
suspect I have to rename them, silly me. How do I do that????
